Meet Eileen, one of the incredible volunteers behind so much of what we do. She kindly shared some words with us about why she continues to volunteer with our program and what welcoming new neighbors means to her.

Volunteers like Eileen are at the heart of our work, helping create connections, build belonging, and support newcomers as they navigate life in a new community. 🧡💙

"By the summer of 2023, my life had slowed considerably, and retirement was right around the corner. I knew, in my life’s next chapter, that I wished to give to my community, but in a different way than my work life had demanded. I was finished with boardrooms, meetings, e-mails, and report-writing. I was seeking a way to get involved in something more “hands on.”

That summer I discovered the New Neighbor Coalition and volunteered to help. I anticipated my participation would involve an occasional run to the grocery store with a newly arrived family and similar errands and activities. Indeed, my first “call” was to help a young family, newly arrived from Venezuela, learn to navigate the local laundromat. I arrived at their apartment with a container of Tide and a roll of quarters and off we went.

When I first learned (with the help of Google Translate), that the family had been in the U.S. for only three days, my heart went out to them. I couldn’t begin to imagine the fatigue, sense of loss, confusion in navigating this new home, and potential trauma. I felt overwhelmed for them. And, for their part, the young couple were so grateful for my help – all it took was a smile, a kindness to their toddler son – my part was easy. Soon afterwards, their parents and siblings also arrived in the U.S., and both families quickly adopted me into their ranks.

Now…almost three years later, we have been through a lot together: school enrollments, doctor and dentist appointments, field trips, the citizenship process, etc. And we have been lucky to celebrate so many events together as well: a wedding, the birth of a child, new jobs, and buying a first home! We have navigated difficulties and moments of joy, walking through them together. We have become family to each other and my heart is full as I see my family members flourish.

The New Neighbor Coalition has provided incredible support to me in helping, what has now become, “my” family; I know Momina, Luke, and others are a phone call away and always responsive. My experience allows me to give freely in ways I believe to be meaningful and to be part of something important. A perfect fit for me!"

🚨 Just ONE WEEK to go! 🚨

Get ready– we are officially just 7 days away from Give Big CHQ 2026 on June 11th!

Thanks to the generosity of our Chautauqua Region Community Foundation's Give Big CHQ is such an important day for nonprofits across Chautauqua County, and we hope you’ll consider donating to some of the great organizations and programs, like Jamestown Farmers Market, that do so much to keep our region thriving.

📅 Mark your calendars and spread the word! Your support helps us support new arrivals with the resources, information, and relationships to navigate their new home and become an integral part of our community. 📣

Remember:
🧡More unique donations received between 7:16am and 7:16pm equals 🟰more money from the 716 Stretch Pool. 🦬

🩵Because of the Minute Match bonuses and the 716 Stretch Pool, donations made right at 9am, 2pm, and 7pm have the most impact. Make sure to set your alarm because the Minute Match pool gets exhausted quick! ⏰

👀 Check out the rest of the day's donation schedule to see where your generosity can have the most impact. 👀

Willow is one of our OG core volunteers who helps make this work possible. She stopped by the other day to share some of the why behind her dedication to welcoming new neighbors to Chautauqua County.

We are so grateful to volunteers like Willow who are the backbone of our program and help support newcomers in our community in big and small ways every day.

If you’d like to support this work too, we hope you’ll consider donating during Give Big CHQ on June 11. 🧡

Mark your calendars– Give Big CHQ is a little over three weeks away! This year, we're collaborating with our sister program, Jamestown Farmers Market to boost our fundraising efforts and increase our community impact. 🧡🩵

Give Big CHQ is coming on June 11, and Jamestown Farmers Market and New Neighbors Coalition are excited to be involved this year as sister programs!

While our organizations each have unique missions, they both exist to foster community — JFM through a stronger local food system, and NNC through cultural celebration and advocacy. A key cornerstone to the work of both organizations is empowering its communities through education, and we’re focusing our fundraising efforts this year through Give Big CHQ on expanding those educational opportunities. JFM seeks to broaden both vendor and market shopper education through workshops and seminars, and NNC has goals to expand its learning opportunities for immigrant neighbors.

While JFM and NNC each have their own fundraiser through Give Big CHQ, we’re teaming up to demonstrate the power of community. We’re combining our efforts through June 11 and encourage you to support both organizations if you can.

Thanks, Chautauqua Region Community Foundation!

We were very fortunate to be chosen as one of nine rural communities taking part in Welcoming America's 2026 Rural Welcoming Initiative.

We are thrilled to get to be a part of this year's cohort and be at the forefront of rural welcoming efforts across the country, and are excited to continue working towards a community where everyone, no matter where they’re from, can belong

Last month, the Coalition's Director, Momina Di Blasio, finished a 7-month leadership course with the Institute for Nonprofit Practice, alongside a wonderful Western New York-based cohort, which included our sister program's director, Nick Weith, of the Jamestown Farmers Market.

This experience offered meaningful opportunities to connect with leaders across the region, exchanging ideas and developing the skills need to continue our work of welcoming and belonging.

We’re deeply appreciative to the Institute for Nonprofit Practice for bringing this opportunity to our region, and to the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation for making our participation possible. We’re excited to bring this learning back to Jamestown and continue growing together as a program and as a community.

We’ve finally had a second to catch our breath since Monday’s Nowruz dinner, and we just want to say how blown away we were by the community's love and support for the program and the cause.

It was incredibly moving to have so many of you come out and dine with us. The energy in the room was so special, as were the people in it. This may have to turn into an annual event. 🥰

Thank you to everyone who showed up to eat, spread the word, or volunteered your time to help pull this off. Nothing is possible without all of you. 💛

‼️Lengthly post ahead! Thank you for your time‼️

With the rise in ICE enforcement across the country and in our region, we are once again reminded that it is not only those being detained and deported that are deeply affected but the families and communities who are left behind. Children may come home from school to find their parents are gone, spouses are now the sole breadwinner for their household, and parents and guardians don't know where their children are.

In the aftermath of a loved one's detention, those left to gather the pieces are forced to navigate a new reality just to put food on the table and survive. We have seen countless examples nationwide of families not knowing where their loved ones are for days, sometimes weeks. The US should not be in the business of disappearing people without a trace, regardless what documentation a person may possess.

The New Neighbors Coalition feels very strongly that people deserve to know where their loved ones are, even when they are detained. We believe detainees deserve to know there are people who care about them, about their legal rights, and about their inherent right to dignity and due process. And we steadfastly maintain that the children and families left behind deserve to feel supported and safe.

📣There has been a rise in ICE sightings in our area. We very much appreciate the community's desire to share this information with their networks to help keep people safe. Though information sharing is so important, especially in such a small community such as ours, we want to stress that vague, unverified information can sometimes do more harm than good. We ask those who may have information about ICE, to share it with us so that we can use it to support those who are most affected by mass immigration enforcement.📣

If you have any relevant information about ICE sightings in our area, please share it with us either by:
