MEMORIAL DAY UPDATE: Jamestown’s 2026 Memorial Day PARADE has been CANCELLED due to the weather forecast.

A Memorial Day CEREMONY will still be held in the Recreation Center at 10:00 am on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25.

Flags will not be put up at Memorial Square on Monday morning.

MEMORIAL DAY UPDATE: The current weather forecast for Memorial Day is for showers until mid-afternoon. A final decision on holding the parade will be made by the American Legion and VFW not later than 2:00 pm on Sunday, May 24 and will be disseminated promptly.

If the parade is cancelled, a ceremony will be held in the Recreation Center at 10:00 am Monday, May 25.

A World War II Navy veteran who graduated from Rogers High School in Newport will be laid to rest Monday with no known family to attend his funeral — and organizers are asking the public to help give him the farewell he deserves.

John Bernard Arnold III, 98, died May 6 in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts. According to Hanover/Hanson Veteran Services, Arnold passed away with no known relatives to stand beside him at his final services.

“Let’s send him off the way a veteran should be,” the group wrote.

Before serving in the United States Navy during World War II, Arnold graduated from Rogers High School in Newport and attended Rhode Island State University for two years.

Arnold served aboard the USS Houston and told caregivers at Veterans Affairs that he visited 27 countries during his military service, including Naples, Florence, Venice, Sardinia and Capri.

His funeral will be held Monday, May 18, at Saint Joseph the Worker Church, 1 Maquan Street in Hanson, Massachusetts. Visitation begins at 10 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. Funeral Mass. Burial will follow at Cedar Knoll Cemetery in Taunton.

Organizers said attendees, pallbearers and procession participants are all needed to help honor the veteran’s life and service.

Anyone wishing to attend the service or join the procession may simply arrive at the church. Those interested in serving as pallbearers are asked to contact Terrence O’Keeffe at [email protected].

For Newport, it is a final opportunity to honor one of its own — a Rogers High graduate, a WWII sailor, and a member of the Greatest Generation who served his country and now faces his final goodbye without family at his side.

Mourning the loss of a great man, a dedicated veteran, husband, father, friend. He was the definition of a Jamestowner. We are all better for having known you. Rest easy, we have the watch Don.
