Every Memorial Day, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery becomes one of the most visited military memorials in the country. What many people don’t realize is that one of the “unknowns” buried there was eventually identified decades later through DNA testing.

In 1998, advances in mitochondrial DNA testing identified the Vietnam War Unknown as Air Force Lt. Michael Joseph Blassie, whose aircraft was shot down near An Lộc in 1972. His remains were returned to his family in Missouri, and the crypt that once held the Vietnam Unknown has remained empty ever since.

Today, the remaining unknowns still rest at Arlington as representatives of countless unidentified American service members lost in war. While military agencies continue identifying missing personnel using modern forensic technology, there are currently no public plans to exhume the others buried at the tomb.

Thanks to all who came out to put flags on the Veterans graves yesterday. It looked good and is very much appreciated. Found several Veterans that have bricks at the Memorial. Here's a few pictures that I got. Terri Feeney Leigh Wilson Morgan Bruce Dillon W Arthur Wise

- Know the Difference. Honor the Meaning.

Not every patriotic holiday carries the same purpose — and deserves our deepest reverence.

Memorial Day is not a celebration. It is a solemn day of remembrance for the men and women who died in service to our country.

Armed Forces Day honors those currently serving.

Veterans Day honors all who have worn the uniform.

At Taps for Veterans, we believe remembrance should never be rushed, confused, or taken for granted. Those who gave their lives for America deserve more than a passing thought — they deserve our pause, our gratitude, and our promise to never forget.

This Memorial Day, let us remember what the day truly means.

🎺 24 notes. One final promise.

It is with profound sorrow that we bid farewell to John Kinsel Sr., one of the last surviving Navajo Code Talkers, who passed away at the age of 107.

From Bougainville and Guam to Iwo Jima, he spoke a sacred language transformed into an unbreakable code — confounding the enemy, safeguarding vital operations, and helping secure victory in the Pacific. His words protected countless lives, even as so many of his brothers in arms never returned home.

His service was quiet.
His impact was immeasurable.

Today, we honor not only his extraordinary life, but also the thousands who fell in the battles his messages helped guide — Marines, sailors, and soldiers whose sacrifices are forever tied to his voice.

Though his voice has fallen silent, his legacy — and theirs — will echo through generations.

Rest in honored peace, Code Talker.
Your words helped change history. 🕊️🇺🇸
