Public safety depends on strong frontline supervision.
For years, the Jamesburg Police Department operated with four Sergeants and one Corporal. The Borough is now attempting to change that structure to two Sergeants and two Corporals, effectively eliminating a supervisory position and reducing opportunities for future Sergeant promotions.
The Borough is attempting to promote only to the rank of Corporal, a position that receives less compensation than a Sergeant. The P.B.A. believes this change is being used to circumvent the existing collective bargaining agreement between the Borough and P.B.A. Local 389 while assigning many of the same responsibilities traditionally performed by Sergeants.
Corporals who are not supervisors should not be expected to perform the same duties and carry the same responsibilities as Sergeants while receiving less pay. Leadership, accountability, and proper compensation must go hand in hand.
Sergeants provide critical oversight, mentor younger officers, review reports, supervise major incidents, and ensure accountability. Reducing frontline supervision increases workloads, creates additional liability, and leaves fewer experienced leaders available to support officers and protect our communities.
The residents of Jamesburg and Helmetta deserve a police department with strong leadership, adequate supervision, and a commitment to investing in public safety—not fewer supervisory positions and fewer opportunities to develop future leaders.
Why is the Borough reducing supervisory leadership instead of strengthening it?
