The James City Historical Society was formed in 1980 by Ms. Thelma Bryant.
The fundamental mission of the James City Historical Society, Inc. was to preserve and perpetuate the unique history, struggle and quest for freedom of thousands of American black slaves who followed the Union Troops during the Civil War into New Bern, North Carolina and then eventually would settle across the Trent and the Neuse Rivers in a refugee settlement which was named James City to honor those freedmen and slaves the James City Historical Society constructed a museum park in James City.
The park is open to the public and tours of the museum park are conducted for free. The park is open every third Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. Tours are also granted upon request.
