The James City Historical Society was formed in 1980 by Ms. Thelma Bryant.

The fundamental mission of the James City Historical Society, Inc. was to preserve and perpetuate the unique history, struggle and quest for freedom of thousands of American black slaves who followed the Union Troops during the Civil War into New Bern, North Carolina and then eventually would settle across the Trent and the Neuse Rivers in a refugee settlement which was named James City to honor those freedmen and slaves the James City Historical Society constructed a museum park in James City.

The park is open to the public and tours of the museum park are conducted for free. The park is open every third Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. Tours are also granted upon request.

1. A tour of the Crockett-Miller Slave Quarters Museum Park located in James City: The tour is free and takes about 45 minutes. It features the Crockett-Miller Slave Quarters, {One of the few remaining free standing slave quarters left in NC} the far cemetery, burial grounds of the former residents of the Trent River Settlement, circa 1860. A functioning out house complete with a Sears’s catalogue, circa 1940. A large monument on the Far Cemetery commemorating all of five hundred former slaves buried there. The site includes the artifacts from the archeological study by East Carolina University. It is really a walk back into time.

3. The tours on the history of the Trent River Settlement and the history of New Bern from 1860 to reconstruction are given upon request. This tour lecture takes about 35 to 40 minutes. A question and answer period follows the lecture.
