A Catholic Mass in Ecuador turns deadly in seconds when a large wooden crucifix falls from behind the altar, striking a priest as he prepares Communion.

Worshippers scream and rush toward Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari inside a church in Guayaquil, with one woman desperately calling for an ambulance.

The Archdiocese of Guayaquil has since confirmed the priest's death, but what caused the crucifix to collapse remains unclear. The tragedy comes just one day after the church celebrated the anniversary of his ordination.

The Holy See Press Office on Tuesday evening released a statement about Pope Leo’s surgery stating: “The intraoperative frozen-section examination confirmed the diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma [a type of non-small cell lung cancer], as suspected from the preoperative tests.”

The statement also said “the Holy Father was in the operating room for approximately three hours; the operation itself lasted approximately 90 minutes. The operation was successful, and there were no complications.”

“Following the operation, the pope awoke normally and, after a brief period of observation, returned to his room on the 10th floor.”

Just hours after his audience with the pope, Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA issued a strong and lengthy statement Oct. 12 against the planned livestreamed ex*****on by firing squad of Ford Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan, calling it a "public spectacle of barbarically killing our adversaries."

In his statement, Archbishop Broglio, former president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and head of the military archdiocese since 2008, said the dignity of the human person was at stake, and called upon "all men and women of good will to ask that this decision be reconsidered." He added, "As I would in the case of a procured abortion, I oblige any Catholics assigned to the firing squad to request to be excused from this action contrary to the teaching of the Church."

As a U.S. military base, Fort Hood is under the pastoral jurisdiction of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA.
