Queens Memory

Queens Memory Queens Memory aims to record & preserve history in Queens - supported by QPL and Queens College.

Queens Memory is a collaborative effort between Queens Library and Queens College. It's a digital archive, but its public face is a website featuring interviews and photos documenting the lives of contemporary Queens residents. These stories and images are presented alongside digitized historical photographs, maps, news clippings and other rare archival records. People who live in Queens (or used

to) can see images of how their communities have changed over the decades and hear the voices of neighbors telling stories that define life in this dynamic and diverse part of the world. Visitors to the Queens Memory website have the benefit of seeing these otherwise scattered archival materials and personal stories in one, searchable, user-friendly site of collective memory.

The morning begins with a Youth Stewardship program, followed by a Juneteenth observance featuring music, poetry, and reflections from community leaders, artists, and faith leaders.

It’s time for football (soccer)! ⚽️ Looking back at U.S. soccer history, check out these team photos from the 1961 International Soccer League games held right here in NYC at the Polo Grounds in upper Manhattan. Formed in 1960 and dissolved in 1965, the ISL was a pioneer for the sport in the States. Captured in Central Park these photos show:

In celebration of National Immigrant Heritage Month, join us for "Memories in Motion" — a free all-ages community event illuminating the stories that travel with us.

Through home movie screenings, a digital archiving workshop, one-on-one consultations, and brunch with neighbors, you'll learn practical ways to care for VHS, MiniDV, and Hi8 recordings while reflecting on the people, places, and moments that shape our sense of home.

📼 Have old tapes tucked away? Bring them with you! While we won't be digitizing tapes on-site, we'll assess their condition, answer your questions, share trusted digitization resources, and provide take-home worksheets and preservation guides to help you take the next step.

After six months of sorting, organizing, backing up, and making sense of our digital lives, the final session of "Organize It or Lose It: Digital Declutter Series" is here.

In June's session, "Saving Is Remembering," audiovisual archivist Marie Lascu will help participants create a realistic six-month plan for caring for their digital files, including backup strategies and long-term preservation tips. Whether you've attended every session or are joining for the first time, you'll leave with practical tools to help keep your photos, videos, documents, and other important files safe and accessible.

Bring your questions, share strategies with fellow participants, and set yourself up for success beyond this series.

Join us at the Jackson Heights branch of the Queens Public Library during Historic Jackson Heights Weekend for a special pop-up celebrating both neighborhood history and World Cup memories.

Explore historic photographs, maps, oral histories, and other treasures from the our archives, and bring a photo of your own to digitize or a story to share about Jackson Heights.

As the 2026 World Cup brings the world together, we're also collecting memories of past tournaments — from watch parties and pickup games to celebrations in parks, cafés, schools, and streets across Queens. What can a rusty nail, a discarded car bumper, or a piece of corrugated metal become in the hands of an artist?

This month, we’re featuring artist Annalisa Iadicicco, whose work transforms reclaimed materials into powerful photographic and sculptural artworks that explore social justice, environmental issues, and community connection.

In her oral history with Jo-Ann Wong as part of "In The Artist's Studio," Annalisa reflects on her path from photography in television and film production to founding The Blue Bus Project - a nonprofit that brings hands-on arts experiences to underserved communities across New York City. She also shares stories from her collaborations with:

June is Pride Month! 🌈 Today, we’re celebrating Tarlach Mac Niallais Way in Sunnyside, Queens.

Born in Belfast, Tarlach Mac Niallais began his journey as an LGBTQ+ and disability rights activist fighting exclusion in Northern Ireland. In the 1980s, he moved to New York City and settled in Sunnyside, Queens. He joined the Lavender & Green Alliance, a social group for Irish LGBTQ+ New Yorkers that fought exclusion from the city's main St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He also helped launch the inclusive St. Pat’s for All Parade, which has marched through Queens since 2000.
