Increase Carpenter Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, was organized June 25, 2012 by thirteen women in an effort to fulfill the mission of the National Society with a commitment to historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Increase Carpenter,

the namesake of our chapter, was Quartermaster for the Continental Army, earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the Jamaica Militia, wore the uniform of the Jamaica Minuteman, served on the Committee of Correspondence, and served time as a prisoner of war. The family of Increase Carpenter owned the inn located in nearby Hollis, Queens, where a protest meeting of the Patriots of the American Revolution was held. Increase Carpenter is buried in Prospect Cemetery, on the campus of York College, in Jamaica, Queens. The cemetery is also the final resting place for more than fifty Revolutionary War patriots.

These are photos of the Memorial Day bouquets left at the Remsen Family Cemetery in Forest Hills where Revolutionary War patriots are buried. We cleaned the tombstones and signs at this cemetery last year. The bouquets were donated by the Gold Star Mothers, the Ladies Auxiliary, and the American Legion Post 1424.
This Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their sacrifice shaped the freedoms we cherish today and remains an enduring part of our shared history.
From all of us at the Increase Carpenter Chapter of the NSDAR, we wish you a meaningful and reflective Memorial Day.

Increase Carpenter helped welcome veterans home from their trip to Washington, DC yesterday for the Big Apple Honor Flight. Most of the veterans arriving at Laguardia Airport yesterday fought in the Vietnam War. They had a day long trip to DC to visit various memorials. Thanks to Richmond County DAR in Staten Island for organizing this event.

Increase Carpenter's Vice Regent Francesca Bergenn organized the DAR's travelling exhibit about the American Revolution to be presented at the Bayside Historical Society in Bayside, Queens from March 17-24, 2026. Many are praising the exhibit for discussing the lives of marginalized societies during the Revolution in the 18th century such as African Americans, women, and American Indians.

As we continue to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of the United States of America, there is growing interest in family and local history.

One. That is the number of women who have received the Medal of Honor in U.S. history.

Her name is Dr. Mary Edwards Walker. 🎖️

A surgeon during the Civil War, she often crossed enemy lines to treat civilians and was even captured as a Prisoner of War. She was originally awarded the medal in 1865, but in 1917, the Army changed the eligibility criteria and demanded she return it.

Dr. Walker refused. She wore it every day until her death in 1919. (Her medal was officially restored by President Carter in 1977). She didn't just practice medicine, she practiced defiance.
