During this , Wondermore board member Sarina attended sessions by author-illustrator Ruth Chan. Sarina’s takeaways, quoted below, embody our mission & values as an organization as well as the goals of our authors-in-schools program:

“I never had an author visit my school growing up, and certainly not one who looked like me. Last week I watched Ruth Chan with a room of first graders at the Mather School in Dorchester. She shared some of her early drawings, walked them through how she writes a book, and read THANK YOU, NEIGHBOR! ()

At one point [Ruth] drew a single squiggle and asked what it could be… The kids were jumping in…building on one another’s ideas. She made it feel easy, and doable!

As a kid, I didn’t think writing or illustrating a book was something I could try. I support Wondermore so more kids can see that they can, especially through people that look like them.”

We are proud to partner with authors and illustrators who bring diverse immigration stories to life, often giving students the chance to see their own—or their family’s—experiences reflected on the page. Our newest book list features titles by these creators.

View and download this annotated list on our website, and consider gifting one of these titles to a young reader in your life. www.wondermoreboston.org/immigration-book-list

We love when visiting authors make organic connections to curricula AND current events!

This week, with the Artemis II mission in space, longtime partner Jason Chin visited schools in Boston and Quincy and discussed his nonfiction science picture books--including YOUR PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE (Neal Porter Books), which explores scale and distance on our planet and beyond…way beyond! 🚀🌕🌑🌏

Pictured here, Jason used a spread illustrating the distance between Earth and the moon to point out how the Artemis II astronauts—by circling the dark side of our moon—were deeper in space than any humans had ever been. He also led the students in an exercise about drawing to scale.

Every student at Parker Elementary School (Quincy Public Schools) received their own signed copy of the book to take home.

In honor of National Poetry Month, Wondermore is proud to spotlight our new author partner, poet and novelist Andrea Beatriz Arango.

Andrea recently traveled from her home in Puerto Rico and visited five different Wondermore-partner schools, where she presented 12 sessions to 500 4th-8th graders. During these sessions, Andrea discussed her inspiration for telling stories through poetry: how she fell in love with verse novels after reading THE POET X by Elizabeth Acevedo; how the format makes books feel accessible, to English-language-learning readers in particular; and also how poetry is well suited to the deeply emotional subject matter in her books.

Andrea is the acclaimed author of three novels in verse: her debut, IVELIZ EXPLAINS IT ALL, a Newbery honor book; SOMETHING LIKE HOME, a Pura Belpré honor book; and her newest, IT’S ALL OR NOTHING, VALE.

Many thanks to Andrea and everyone from Boston and Cambridge Public Schools who welcomed her.

Wondermore’s new author partner Mark Oshiro–who embodies the Whitman quote "I contain multitudes”--spent three days in a row at two neighboring schools in Roxbury in which they made engaging and eye-opening presentations to students from grades 5 through 12.

Multitudes were present in the variety of books Mark presented to students: the Percy Jackson volume THE SUN AND THE STAR, coauthored with famed Rick Riordan (Disney Hyperion); a time-bending middle-grade adventure YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE, DAVID BRAVO (HarperCollins); a book based on the video game STAR WARS HUNTERS: BATTLE FOR THE ARENA (LucasFilm Press, Disney Books); and the more personal, heavy-hitting YA novel INTO THE LIGHT (Tor Teen), a psychological mystery featuring a q***r, Latinx adoptee navigating religious trauma and racism.

It was gratifying to see Mark use this diverse body of work and range of genres to entertain and inspire so many kids . Many thanks to Boston Latin Academy and Bridge Boston Charter School for welcoming and embracing Mark Oshiro!

Any librarian or educator knows the popularity of comics and graphic novels with young readers. Last week Wondermore welcomed graphic novelists George O’Connor and Jarrett Dapier, who proved this firsthand at three schools…
George and Jarrett's books are very different: a self-identified “cartoonist,” George is known for his bestselling mythology comics series Olympians and Asgardians; author Jarrett Dapier’s YA graphic novel WAKE NOW IN THE FIRE is based on a true story about high schoolers who organize to overturn a ban of the book Persepolis in Chicago Schools.

Students at these visits interacted personally with both authors and created their own stories and illustrations. The student creativity that was sparked is a tribute to these the talented creators, our school partners in Boston and Chelsea Public Schools, and the wonderful educators and staff who made these visits happen.

These are some of our favorite moments.
