For nearly two decades, Abdinasir Kahin has provided free support to Somali and East African immigrants and asylum seekers in Chicago, drawing on his own experience as an asylum seeker who arrived in the United States in 2001 and was granted asylum in 2006. After experiencing homelessness and hardship before receiving support from compassionate Americans and community organizations,, Kahin dedicated himself to helping others navigate immigration proceedings, access resources, find employment, and build new lives in their communities. . His multilingual skills, community relationships and longstanding partnerships with immigration advocates have made him a trusted resource for immigrants and asylum seekers throughout Chicago.

Room in the Inn provides comprehensive, low-barrier support for people experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health challenges, and other crises. Grounded in hospitality and dignity, the organization brings together shelter, healthcare, counseling, harm-reduction services, case management, and recovery support to meet people where they are and help them move toward greater stability. Through year-round services and outreach, Room in the Inn provides a critical safety net for people who have too often been excluded or failed by traditional systems, demonstrating the power of compassionate, individualized care.

Maura Sullivan, CEO of The Arc of Massachusetts, has sounded the alarm about how the end of Temporary Protected Status for Haitian immigrants will affect people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who rely on Haitian direct support professionals, home health aides, and caregivers. By connecting federal immigration policy to immediate, tangible consequences for some of the state's most vulnerable residents, Sullivan has helped keep the issue in front of lawmakers, reporters, and the public at a moment when it might otherwise have been treated as unrelated to disability policy.

For over 25 years, the Potomac River Clinic (PRC) has served individuals with hearing loss in the Washington, DC region. In 2023, PRC launched the Community Outreach Fund to provide free diagnostic Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) testing for infants—helping underserved families overcome barriers like cost, transportation, and language. PRC continues to advance equitable access to care and improve outcomes for children with hearing loss.

When devastating floods displaced families across Skagit County in 2025, Children of the Valley mobilized quickly to provide emergency shelter, essential supplies, and culturally responsive support for immigrant, migrant, and farmworker communities. Through bilingual services, family assistance, and partnerships that helped meet both immediate and long-term needs, the organization ensured vulnerable families could access aid with dignity during a time of crisis. Its leadership not only supported flood survivors but also helped strengthen local approaches to language access and culturally responsive disaster response.

Julia Steed Mawson is a retired biologist and environmental educator who spent 34 years as an Extension Educator with the University of New Hampshire. Inspired by the Season of Faithful Witness / Catholics in Communion campaign, she participated in the 1,500-person public opposition to a proposed ICE detention center near her community. Mawson’s lifelong commitment to education and community engagement continues through volunteer work with the Laudato Si’ Movement, the Catholic Climate Covenant, and the Ignatian Solidarity Network.
