Happy 251st birthday to the U.S. Navy! ⚓️

The United States Navy began as a small, desperate force during the American Revolution and has since transformed into the most dominant global maritime force. As the country celebrates the 251st anniversary, this legacy is being honored through widespread events across the nation.

📜 History of the Continental Navy

The Navy traces its roots to October 13, 1775, when the Continental Congress voted in Philadelphia to fit out two armed vessels. Urged forward by leaders like John Adams, this new fleet was designed to protect American merchant shipping, disrupt British supply chains, and intercept mu*****ns.
• The Fleet: The Continental Navy outfitted roughly 65 vessels during the war. It was heavily outnumbered, facing a massive British fleet of over 270 warships with only 27 ships of its own in 1776.
• Tactics: Instead of confronting the Royal Navy head-on, the Continental Navy relied extensively on privateering—commissioning civilian ships to attack British commerce. Over 2,000 American privateers captured roughly 1,500 enemy merchant vessels, crippling British trade and driving up insurance rates.
• Famous Leaders: Heroes emerged from this scratch force, most notably John Paul Jones, whose daring raids on the British coast and fierce victories (such as capturing the HMS Serapis) became legend.
• Disbandment and Rebirth: Following the Treaty of Paris in 1783, the cash-strapped Continental Navy was completely sold off and disbanded by 1785. However, rising threats from Barbary pirates and European conflicts forced Congress to permanently bring back a national navy via the Naval Act of 1794
