Hicklin Jr.'s wartime journal after Hurricane Irma to the hundreds of interviews now permanently preserved through the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, our mission has always been the same. Today we remember Navy Nurse Corps Veteran Hazel Jones Womble, who passed away on August 1, 2026, at 106 years old.

Hazel was 104 when she sat down with us to share her story. Born on Christmas Eve in 1919 in Perry, Florida, she trained as a nurse before joining the US Navy during World War II, serving with distinction as a nurse stationed in Bermuda and earning the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. After the war, her dedication to nursing never wavered. She went on to help establish the nursing program at what is now FSCJ (Florida State College at Jacksonville), shaping generations of healthcare professionals over decades in the classroom.

We are so grateful we had the chance to record her memories and preserve her voice for the future. Hear her story in her own words. Her full interview is available on our website and YouTube channel, link in our bio.

The Veterans Museum was recently honored to receive a generous donation from the Rotary Club of Riverside Jacksonville , made possible through their Flags for Heroes Memorial Day weekend event at Memorial Park. Their commitment to supporting veterans and the organizations that serve them means more than words can express.

We are also deeply thankful to the RotaryClubOfSouthJacksonville for their generous contribution to our mission.

Donations like these allow us to continue preserving veteran stories, expanding our kiosk program, and ensuring that every veteran who wants to share their legacy can do so completely free of charge.

We were proud to be part of the event at the Meek-Eaton Research Center and Museum at Florida A&M University, formally showcasing a digital exhibit honoring the veterans, active duty service members, and military families within the FAMU community.
As America celebrates 250 years of independence, it feels right to make sure every chapter of that story is told. Including this one.

Tonight, the Florida Veterans Foundation was honored to attend “The Veterans Legacy Project: A Digital Tribute” at the Meek-Eaton Black Archives Research Center and Museum at Florida A&M University.

This special event celebrated the launch of a landmark digital exhibit honoring the extraordinary military contributions of FAMU alumni, faculty, students, and staff. The project helps preserve the stories and sacrifices of veterans while ensuring future generations can learn from their legacy.

We are proud to partner in recognizing the dedication, courage, and impact of those who have served our nation. Thank you to everyone who helped bring this meaningful tribute to life. 🇺🇸

Two and a half centuries of freedom did not happen by accident.
It was earned on battlefields, defended in the skies, and protected on the open seas by the men and women who answered the call in every generation. From the patriots of 1776 to the veterans we honor today, this nation has always been worth fighting for.

On America's 250th birthday, we celebrate not just a country but the countless individuals who gave everything to keep it free.
