OneProtest's Bear Defenders campaign is joining Sierra Club Florida's Spare Our Bears effort to help keep bear hunting permits out of hunters' hands.

Florida plans to issue 215 permits for this December's black bear hunt.

But a permit does not have to end with a dead bear.

If you are eligible to participate in Florida's hunting-license system, you can enter the bear permit lottery and help turn a hunting tag into a conservation tool.

Applications open TODAY at 10:00 AM Eastern.

Every permit secured by someone committed to protecting bears is one less permit available to someone who intends to kill one.

Florida's bear permit lottery opens this Friday — and this year, bear advocates have a way to fight back.

Florida plans to issue 215 permits for the December black bear hunt. But those permits don't have to end up in the hands of someone who intends to kill a bear.

The Sierra Club's Spare Our Bears campaign is helping conservationists participate in the permit lottery and keep as many bear tags as possible out of hunters' hands.

Last year, many of us personally put our own money into trying to secure these permits. We're doing it again.

A bear tag doesn't have to mean a dead bear. It can mean one bear gets to walk away.

In the 1970s, Florida’s black bears were on the brink of extinction. It has taken 50 years for Florida’s black bear population to rebound from between 300-500 bears to an estimated 4,030 black bears today. Black bears are slow to reproduce and regulate their own populations through a biological process known as delayed implantation. This is nature’s way of keeping bear populations in check. If food is scarce, female bears will not reproduce every two years but instead every 3-4 years. 🐻🖤
