Today, we honor a remarkable woman, a World War II Navy veteran, and a trailblazer whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.

Mrs. Hazel Jones Womble passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the extraordinary age of 106.

Mrs. Womble served our nation during World War II, remaining on active duty until August 1946 before continuing her service in the U.S. Navy Reserve through March 1953. She earned the World War II Victory Ribbon and the American Theater Ribbon, yet like so many women veterans of her generation, her service went largely unrecognized.

For nearly 80 years, she never enrolled with the VA or received the benefits she had earned.

What an awesome experience at the Bosslift today at JTC. Keynote speakers included retired Major General Rita Broadway who serves as the FL ESGR Chair and Major General John Haas who serves as the Adjutant General for the FL Army National Guard. We also had a surprise guest speaker...General Thomas Carden who serves as the Vice Chief of the National Guard Bureau.

We got to participate in orientation flights (riding a chopper), test out the Engagement Skills Trainer Weapons simulator (so awesome!), check out the military vehicle displays, and watch Soldier demonstrations with weapons. We even got to learn about the FLNG Best Warrior Competition and attend the 146th Battalion Deployment Departure ceremony.

We got to meet some pretty great people today. Oh, and we also got to watch a spur of the moment volunteer awards ceremony to 2 ESGR Florida volunteers, Steve Toomey and Colleen Trout. Congratulations to you both!

Thank you Rita, Brie, and Tony for inviting us out to such a cool event where employers and resource providers get to see what their employees (guard members) are doing when they have to leave for training drill days.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support our 12th Annual Women Veterans Recognition Week Gala on June 13th. It truly meant a lot to see so many people show up and celebrate women who have served.

Big thank you to our keynote speaker, General James “Hammer” Hartsell, for sharing your story, and to our MC, Tammy Hodo, for keeping everything flowing so smoothly.
