The Jacksonville Council of the Navy League of the United States is a civilian, not-for-profit educational organization dedicated to supporting the men and women of our national Sea Services (Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine). The Navy League is a civilian organization of over more than 50,000 members dedicated to keeping the American people and government officials informed about America’s national security requirements, and their relationship to our economic prosperity. The Navy League focuses particular attention on the Sea Services component of our great defense team ... the United States Navy ... Coast Guard ... Marine Corps ... and US-flagged Merchant Marine. Over the past several years, your Board of Directors has determined that service to others, and particularly to our young people, is a vital role for this organization. Our primary beneficiaries are the Naval ROTC Unit at Jacksonville University, and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Sea Cadet Squadron located at NAS Jacksonville. Navy" through an annual gift to the NROTC scholarship fund established in memory of the late Congresswoman Tillie Fowler. In addition, the council presents a sword each year to the outstanding midshipman of the JU NROTC battalion. The council's other primary beneficiary is the Franklin D. The squadron has 25 active cadets, ages 14 through 17. Most financial support for the FDR Squadron comes from our council.

Today, on National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we pause to honor those who were held as prisoners of war and those who have not returned home. We remember their families, who carry that absence every day.

Join Us for National POW/MIA Recognition Day 2026

The National POW/MIA Memorial & Museum invites you to join us for National POW/MIA Recognition Day 2026, a powerful two-day community tribute dedicated to honoring America's Prisoners of War, those who remain Missing in Action, and the families who continue to carry their legacy. The event takes place September 18–19, 2026, at the National POW/MIA Memorial & Museum in Jacksonville, Florida.

The observance begins on Friday, September 18, with our 24-Hour Remembrance Vigil, where individuals, families, veteran organizations, civic groups, businesses, and active-duty military units stand watch around the clock to ensure that those who have not returned home are never forgotten. Registration for Vigil participants is now open.

On Saturday, September 19, the community is invited to a day of remembrance featuring:

🎖️ National POW/MIA Recognition Day Ceremony
✈️ Dreamland Squadron Flyover
🏍️ American Legion Riders 7 Bridges Ride arrival
🎶 Live entertainment throughout the day
🌭 Food trucks and refreshments
🎖️ Veterans organizations, exhibits, and family-friendly activities

Whether you stand a Vigil watch, attend the ceremony, or simply spend time learning the stories of those who sacrificed so much for our nation, your presence helps ensure that their service—and their sacrifice—will never be forgotten.

This October, the Blue Angels celebrate their 80th birthday, alongside a rare joint performance from the USAF Thunderbirds, a first for this show, and a fitting tribute during America's 250th.
