Jacksonville has a striking freeway-to-freeway interchange where I-295 meets SR 202, also called J. Turner Butler Boulevard. From directly overhead, its ramps form a clean, circular pattern that resembles a bullseye or whirlpool.

The design is a turbine interchange, built to keep traffic moving through smooth, continuous curves rather than tight cloverleaf loops. The goal was to improve the connection between Jacksonville’s beltway and Butler Boulevard, a major east to west route serving the southeast side of the city.

Construction of this major interchange is widely reported as an $80 million project, completed in the mid-to-late 2000s, with the interchange opening by late 2008 as the final pieces came online.

Because the ramps are elevated and arranged with unusual symmetry, the interchange has become a frequently shared aerial landmark, often referred to as the “Jacksonville Interchange Spiral” or a “whirlpool” interchange.
