Sometimes the smallest discoveries are the most exciting! We are always thrilled when our students find sensitive and very sensitive aquatic species in the river. As indicator species, these macroinvertebrates tell an important story about the health of the river ecosystem. Some of the species we commonly look for include dragonfly nymphs, hellgrammites, and water scorpions. Other species, such as crayfish, can also provide valuable clues about ecosystem health, especially when their populations are thriving. These fascinating discoveries help students better understand the connections between water quality, biodiversity, and a healthy river environment. 😊
