Member and Membership Chair, Brittany Cohill had the Mandarin Museum & Historical Society sparkling for Mandarin Rotary's Run to Feed the Hungry 2024 Donor Cocktail Social. With a successful run in the books from the previous weekend, members enjoyed hor's d'oeuvres, beverages, musical entertainment, fine weather, and a raffle drawing. Congratulations to JP Scott on winning the $5000 fifty-fifty raffle drawing! Mandarin Rotary extends a warm and heartfelt thank you to all of our sponsors, including Chick-fil-A Mandarin for feeding our hungry runners on race day. As always, thanks is owed to our tireless Social Chair, Fred Pozin.

Another Tuesday, and another spectacular speaker at Mandarin Rotary! It was truly the pleasure of our club to welcome Michael Cooley, Director of Agriculture/Technical Director for Equipping Farmers International , this morning. Michael shared with us some, always staggering, statistics about world hunger. Did you know that 2 billion people around our globe do not know where their next meal will come from? That's one quarter of the world's population! Michael shared how, through his organization, Equipping Farmers International is teaching people around the globe how to farm for themselves in a sustainable way through conservative and regenerative farming methods. At Mandarin Rotary, one of our primary missions is to serve the hungry in our community. Our annual Race to Feed the Hungry 2024 is upcoming, and a great way to support the local food banks here in mandarin.

It was Mandarin Rotary's honor to host former Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sheriff, Dr. Nat Glover, this past Tuesday morning. Dr. Glover shared stories and lessons from his life that everyone can learn something from. As he mentioned many times, his life has not been easy, but divine intervention has brought him to where his is today. Dr. Glover has compiled his memoirs in a book, Striving for Justice: A Black Sheriff in the Deep South. It is very well written and full of valuable information. Check it out!

Honduras Water Project Inauguration!

Hellen Keller famously said, "Alone we can do so little, but together, we can do so much." Over the last few weeks, we saw that quote come to life as we celebrated the inauguration of the completed water project we sponsored in Honduras.

Six Rotary Clubs from District 6970, partnered with the Usula Rotary Club from San Pedro Sula, Honduras to provide clean water to a village of 450 people in the Merendon mountains!

The inauguration of the water plant took place on January 24, 2024 at the local school in the Virtud Village. We were so fortunate to have members from our district to be there in person to participate in this event! The people from the village came out to celebrate and show their appreciation for having access to water in their home, school, and church. Prior to the completion of this water project, the people in the Virtud village had to walk nearly two miles each way to manually carry water to their homes -- and they did that twice per day!

As a show of appreciation, the people from the village also brought their harvest which included different vegetables, fruits and coffee to share with us. It was a great experience to hear stories from the people of how life was much better now that they have clean water in their homes. This project was possible with the partnership of the Rotary club of Bartram Trail – Julington Creek, Rotary Club of Mandarin, Rotary Club of Deerwood, Rotary Club of Deland Downtown, Rotary Club of Deland (Breakfast) and the Rotary Club of Ponte Vedra.

Projects like this are a great embodiment of the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self."

It is time to start getting excited about our opportunity to feed those in need in the community through our annual Run to Feed the Hungry. All members are encouraged to help with fundraising by seeking out business sponsors locally. The local business community is encouraged to participate in this event, which provides so much value back to the community that we all treasure. Let's get the fundraising out of the way so we can focus on the fun!

This past Tuesday at Mandarin Rotary we had the pleasure of hearing from member, John Nugent, and his team from Ameris Bank regarding bank fraud and scams. From check fraud to romance scams, John and his team put together a very informative and entertaining presentation for everyone in attendance.
