Honduras Water Project Inauguration!
Hellen Keller famously said, "Alone we can do so little, but together, we can do so much." Over the last few weeks, we saw that quote come to life as we celebrated the inauguration of the completed water project we sponsored in Honduras.
Six Rotary Clubs from District 6970, partnered with the Usula Rotary Club from San Pedro Sula, Honduras to provide clean water to a village of 450 people in the Merendon mountains!
The inauguration of the water plant took place on January 24, 2024 at the local school in the Virtud Village. We were so fortunate to have members from our district to be there in person to participate in this event! The people from the village came out to celebrate and show their appreciation for having access to water in their home, school, and church. Prior to the completion of this water project, the people in the Virtud village had to walk nearly two miles each way to manually carry water to their homes -- and they did that twice per day!
As a show of appreciation, the people from the village also brought their harvest which included different vegetables, fruits and coffee to share with us. It was a great experience to hear stories from the people of how life was much better now that they have clean water in their homes. This project was possible with the partnership of the Rotary club of Bartram Trail – Julington Creek, Rotary Club of Mandarin, Rotary Club of Deerwood, Rotary Club of Deland Downtown, Rotary Club of Deland (Breakfast) and the Rotary Club of Ponte Vedra.
Projects like this are a great embodiment of the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self."
