Jacksonville Elks Lodge 221 Supports Surfers for Autism Event in Jacksonville Beach, FL.
Members volunteer their time and Lodge donates $500 to help create a safe, memorable day for participants.
On August 8, 2026, Jacksonville Elks Lodge 221 proudly supported the Surfers for Autism event, a free community program designed for children and adults with autism and other developmental delays.
The day brought participants, families, volunteers, and local supporters together for an uplifting experience centered on safety, encouragement, fellowship, and fun.
Three members of our Lodge—Kelly Paulson, Brian Pastorini, and Patrick Phelan—spent a significant portion of their day volunteering at the event. Kelly Paulson served on walkie-talkie duty, coordinating with the event’s main coordinator, known by the nickname “Moose,” while also helping direct surfers and families throughout the day and assisting with weather-related conditions.
Their service reflected the Elks’ commitment to community involvement and to supporting programs that make a meaningful difference in the lives of local families.
Participants were organized into five different color groups for the day, helping the event run smoothly and ensuring each person received the attention and support they needed. Lunch was provided at no cost through the generosity of local restaurants, adding to the welcoming atmosphere for participants and their families.
Brian Pastorini and Patrick Phelan served as “watermen,” a role that required strength, focus, and a deep commitment to safety. Each participant in the water was accompanied by a lead volunteer and supported by three watermen, creating a secure environment that allowed the surfers to enjoy the experience with confidence. Although the work was physically demanding and exhausting, our volunteers found it deeply rewarding.
The event proved to be a joyful and memorable day, especially for the many children who participated. Smiles, encouragement, and goodwill filled the beach as volunteers worked together to make each experience special. In addition to member volunteer service, Jacksonville Elks Lodge 221 donated $500 to help cover event costs, further demonstrating the Lodge’s dedication to supporting inclusive community programs.
