Benjamin Elijah Mays (August 1, 1894 – March 28, 1984) was an American Baptist minister and American rights leader who is credited with laying the intellectual foundations of the American civil rights movement. Mays taught and mentored many influential activists, including Martin Luther King Jr, Julian Bond, Maynard Jackson, and Donn Clendenon, among others. His rhetoric and intellectual pursuits focused on Black self-determination. Mays' commitment to social justice through nonviolence and civil resistance were cultivated from his youth through the lessons imbibed from his parents and eldest sister. The peak of his public influence coincided with his nearly three-decade tenure as the sixth president of , a historically black institution of higher learning, in

The John Lewis Student Center honors a great person, whose example of leadership will inspire students, today and for generations.

From 1987 until his death in 2020, the son of Alabama sharecroppers served in Congress representing the district in which the Tech campus is located. During that time, he was a frequent guest at the Institute — delivering the keynote address at Commencement in 1995 and 2011, imparting wisdom about leadership to students, providing internship opportunities to students, and accepting Georgia Tech’s Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social Courage in 2013.

The Role Models pose with the 3,000-pound sculpture of renowned physicist and Nobel laureate Albert Einstein on Georgia Tech’s campus. It sits at one of the busiest corridors ­– the northwest corner of Tech Green near the Bunger-Henry Building.

American artist Robert Berks made the sculpture. It is his third and final likeness of the scientist. One is housed at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington D.C. The second found a home at the Israel Academy of Science and Humanities. 👐🏿✨
