Saving wildlife by solving their health issues! A program of AAZV 🦓🐘🦏🐅🐢🐆 But who is helping the wild animals that are sick . . . injured . . . or even dying?

There are dozens — perhaps hundreds — of nonprofit organizations working to save critical habitats worldwide. And who is helping the zoo animals that are in many cases our only hope to prevent extinction? We are, with The Wild Animal Health Fund. In 2005, the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV) launched The Wild Animal Health Fund to fund critical research and studies that give zoo an

imals and wildlife a better quality of life. The Fund is very different than other environment-focused conservation organizations. While other groups do the important work of preserving and protecting natural habitats, The Wild Animal Health Fund focuses on the animals themselves — everything from tiny tree frogs to humpback whales. The Wild Animal Health Fund has one goal: To optimize the health, welfare and conservation of zoo animals and wildlife through critical research and studies.

Frogs, toads, salamanders, and caecilians are among the most threatened animals on Earth, and your support is helping change that.

This National Dolphin Day, the Wild Animal Health Fund (WAHF) is proud to have supported researchers working to protect some of the world's most vulnerable dolphins and marine mammals. 🐬

In South America, a WAHF-funded team investigated why orphaned Franciscana dolphin calves stranded on beaches in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina, and how to keep them alive. Their work extended rehabilitation survival from a maximum of just 5 days to more than 6 months - a landmark first for the species.

In Bolivia, WAHF-supported scientists assessed the health and welfare of Bolivian river dolphins living under growing human pressure, building the evidence needed to protect them.

At UC Davis, researchers investigated how Dolphin Morbillivirus and Phocine Distemper Virus invade and spread in dolphins and sea lions, foundational work that brings researchers closer to understanding and treating these lethal diseases.

Through the Wild Animal Health Fund, your support is helping veterinarians and researchers tackle some of the toughest challenges in wildlife health. In 2025 alone, we funded $149,835 in critical research projects giving species around the world a better chance to survive and thrive. 🧡🤎

From improving pregnancy detection in southern white rhinos, to developing faster diagnostics for deadly fungal diseases in wild snakes, to studying cancer in California sea lions, elephant tuberculosis, climate impacts on wild birds, and safer care for species like zebras and endangered warty pigs, these projects are advancing lifesaving solutions where they’re needed most.

On Zoo Lovers Day, we celebrate the animals who inspire us, and the science that helps protect them. 🧡🤎

Through the Wild Animal Health Fund, zoo and wildlife veterinarians are advancing lifesaving research that too often goes unfunded. With 164 projects supported, $1,779,905 awarded, and work spanning 25 countries, this global effort is helping unlock critical breakthroughs in animal health.

From diagnosing emerging diseases to improving treatment across species, these discoveries strengthen conservation worldwide.

The Panamanian golden frog (pictured) is a true zoo conservation success story. After disappearing from the wild due largely to the devastating chytridiomycosis, this iconic species has been safeguarded through coordinated efforts by zoos and conservation partners. With expert veterinary care, research, and managed breeding programs, populations persist today, offering real hope for future reintroduction.

Established in 2012 as a program of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV), the Wild Animal Health Fund exists because experts saw a gap, and took action to fill it. Today, that vision continues to drive real impact for the animals we love.

🦏 Big Science Happening for White Rhinos 🔬 A Wild Animal Health Fund-supported team at Stellenbosch University, led by Dr. Molly Horgan, is in the midst of groundbreaking research in Kruger National Park, South Africa, investigating tiny blood parasites in free-ranging white rhinos and what they mean for rhino health and conservation. 🌍

Over the past decade, young red pandas have been dying suddenly and unexpectedly from what researchers call "Red Panda Acute Mortality Syndrome", a rapid, often fatal illness striking animals under the age of four. The cause has remained frustratingly elusive.

WAHF donors are helping change that. Their support has funded research into whether adrenal gland dysfunction is at the root of these deaths - and into developing hormone tests that actually work for this species, since tests designed for domestic dogs don't always give accurate results in red pandas.

🦅 Thanks to the generosity of our donors, important research is underway to protect wild raptors from a hidden threat — anticoagulant rodenticides (rat poisons).

Researchers at the University of Georgia are testing the blood of rehabilitating bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, and great horned owls to detect these poisons and understand how they affect the birds' ability to form blood clots.

Meet Jade & Jet. 🐘

As a calf, Jade nearly lost her life to EEHV, the leading cause of death in young Asian elephants in managed care. She survived, and today she's a mom to Jet.

With WAHF support, a team at the Saint Louis Zoo completed a landmark study establishing scientifically-based antiviral dosing recommendations for Asian elephants.

More calves like Jet. That's what this work is for.
