CONNECTION IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF HEALTHY AGING

Living alone does not always mean feeling lonely, but changes in health, mobility, transportation, family structure, and the loss of loved ones can make older adults more vulnerable to isolation.

Did You Know?

The National Institute on Aging reports that social isolation and loneliness are linked to increased risks of heart disease, depression, cognitive decline, and other serious health concerns.

Summer heat and severe weather can make it even harder for seniors to leave home, keep appointments, and stay connected. A phone call, visit, or connection to community resources can make a meaningful difference.

At JFCS, we support the seniors in our community, including our local Holocaust Survivors. Our senior care managers help them remain connected to supportive resources, maintain their independence, and navigate changing physical, emotional, and practical needs with dignity.

Mickey is remembered for his strong community ties, his compassion, readiness to serve, and charitable spirit. After his passing in 2015, the Block Family honored his legacy by naming the food pantry after him in 2016.

SAFE SHELTER OFFERS MORE THAN RELIEF FROM THE HEAT

During a Northeast Florida summer, access to shade, drinking water, air conditioning, and a safe place to sleep can become a matter of survival.

Did You Know?

The 2026 Northeast Florida Point-in-Time Count identified 1,071 people experiencing homelessness in Duval County. Of those individuals, 334 were unsheltered and living in places not intended for human habitation, such as vehicles, sidewalks, parks, or abandoned buildings.

People without stable shelter face prolonged exposure to extreme heat, thunderstorms, flooding, and other conditions that can quickly threaten their health and safety.

Through the Jacksonville Eviction Diversion Program, JFCS works alongside the City of Jacksonville, United Way of Northeast Florida, the Fourth Judicial Circuit Court, and Jacksonville Area Legal Aid to help households address crises before the loss of housing becomes a reality. JFCS STAFF SPOTLIGHT: BROOKE GOLZBEIN

Meet Brooke Golzbein, the dedicated coordinator on behalf of JFCS for Jacksonville's Eviction Diversion Program.

Through this powerful partnership with United Way of Northeast Florida, the City of Jacksonville, Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, and the city's judicial system, JFCS helps families facing eviction remain safely housed. Since the program began, our agency has helped prevent 444 families from being evicted, with more than 82% of clients still in their same homes six months later.

Brooke brings a sense of urgency, persistence, and incredible attention to detail to this work. Many clients are in good standing with their landlords and need one-time assistance after an unexpected hardship, such as illness, loss of income, domestic violence, or the death of a spouse. Her compassion, calm presence, and ability to work with both clients and landlords make a critical difference for families who are scared and unsure of what comes next.

Last year, through the Max Block Food Pantry and our satellite pantries, we provided more than 415,206 meals to more than 46,134 individuals, reflecting a 45% increase in demand compared to the previous fiscal year. Summer can create an especially difficult gap for families whose children depend on school breakfasts and lunches during the academic year.

Did You Know?

According to the Florida Department of Health, 23.3% of children in Duval County experienced food insecurity in 2023, compared with 18.4% statewide. Summer can add to the strain as families cover more meals, higher utility bills, transportation costs, and back-to-school expenses.

Our JFCS Emerging Leaders Board and their families assembled just over 200 backpacks in preparation for the new school year. All of our backpacks and supplies were donated through our Annual Back-to-School Drive which serves our clients who are in foster care and low to no income families that we serve.

For seniors who live alone, have limited mobility, or are managing health concerns on a fixed income, even routine summer conditions can become dangerous.

Did You Know?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that adults ages 65 and older are more susceptible to heat-related health problems. Older adults may not adjust as readily to sudden temperature changes, and chronic health conditions or medications can affect how the body responds to heat.
