AIDS Memorial Project of Northeast Florida It is the legacy and suffering of these people, that have lead us to present day, where HIV is no longer the death sentence it was earlier believed to be.

AMP is dedicated to build & maintain a memorial to people who have died from complications of AIDS related diseases & a living monument for those infected/affected by HIV. We bear witness to the early passing of these individuals marginalized by society—victims of a political system, that at the time stigmatized their existence because of a diagnosis. HIV/AIDS positive individuals found themselves frequently destitute, homeless, truly dependent on the kindness of friends, when family and loved ones, abandoned them to a hostile and fearful community. The inequities and lack of preparation of the medical community to truly handle these complex medical conditions from an AIDS diagnosis compounded these issues for those living with this disease. AMP was launched to pay homage to these brave and frequently disregarded members of our society, through a living memorial that we will create and maintain with support from our community at large.

Today is International Le***an Day. Le***ans played a vital, frontline role in providing care, nursing, blood donations, and advocacy for HIV/AIDS patients during the height of the epidemic in the 1980s and 1990s.

Many le***an nurses and individuals with medical training volunteered in hospitals when mainstream staff often refused to touch or treat stigmatized patients.
Volunteers offered dignified hospice care and companionship to men who were abandoned by their families or isolated by fear.

Le***ans Organizing Blood Drives called
The Blood Sisters. When governments banned gay and bisexual men from donating blood, a critical blood shortage occurred for anemia treatments. Groups like the San Diego Blood Sisters organized alternative blood drives so that healthy donors could supply blood directly to AIDS patients.

Le***an activists pushed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to update the official definition of AIDS so that women suffering from overlooked symptoms could receive medical care and diagnoses. They ran hotlines, spread awareness, and fought for increased research.

The AIDS Memorial Project of Northeast Florida is proud to acknowledge this portion of our community as the unsung heroes in the fight against the AIDS virus. The LGBTQ community is stronger when are united.

Today, we once again marched, proudly displaying the names of people from our community lost to AIDS. It was a moving time, seeing people bow their heads in respect. Listening to our Founder Richard A. Ceriello pointing out where some of the people we're honoring lived, right on the River City Pride - Jacksonville, Florida Parade Route really brought home the importance of our mission.
