At 108 years old, Susan Young Browne has lived through more history than most of us could imagine.

Born in 1918, she came into the world during the final months of World War I. Since then, she has witnessed World War II, the Great Depression, Jim Crow segregation, the Civil Rights Movement, the rise of radio, the golden age of television, the moon landing, the invention of computers, the internet, smartphones, and now artificial intelligence.

But her own life is history, too.

Mrs. Browne grew up in Delaware during segregation, helped her family on a farm without running water or electricity, graduated from Delaware State College for Colored Students in 1945, and spent 30 years teaching children across Delaware — including in a one-room schoolhouse.

And at 108, she is still moving.

She still exercises three times a week. She still starts her mornings with a routine she has followed for decades. She still drives. Her driver’s license was even renewed through 2033.

When asked about aging, her answer was simple: “I grow old gracefully.”

What a testimony.

Susan Young Browne is not just a 108-year-old woman celebrating another birthday. She is a living bridge between the past and the present — a reminder of Black resilience, education, discipline, faith, service, and the power of simply refusing to stop.
