Congratulations to Janene Smith ('07) who was recognized among Marquis Who’s Who of Distinguished Leaders, and featured in the Wall Street Journal and the Southeast regional edition of The New Yorker!
"This recognition honors both the work I do and my lifelong curiosity and commitment to lifting others as I grow. JSU gave me the foundation to lead with purpose, and I carry that forward with profound gratitude. Being named a Marquis Who’s Who Distinguished Leader feels like an affirmation of the way I move through the world with steadiness, clarity, and a focus on building connections. To me, leadership is the practice of showing up, especially when the effort is unseen. This recognition acknowledges not just the milestones, but the quieter, values-driven work.
My time at JSU was formative in every sense. It’s where I learned how to turn potential into structure and discovered the power of community. One of my most meaningful memories is walking each day from Merrill Hall to the Theron Montgomery Building and passing President Meehan on his way home for lunch. He greeted me warmly every single time, looking me in the eye in a way that made me feel seen, not just one face among thousands. That simple, sincere acknowledgment shaped how I understand leadership and how I strive to show up for others. Being a graduate of JSU means carrying forward a legacy of resilience, generosity, and pride. It’s a lineage embodied by people like my great‑uncle and fellow alum Jodie Connell, whose story shaped what courage means to me. JSU is woven into that same spirit of rising and reaching. To be recognized by the university that helped shape my path is something I’m truly grateful for."
