Onslow County 4-H 4-H opens the door for youth to learn leadership skills and explore ways to give back. 4-H revolution

Through 4-H, more than 1900 young people in Onslow County learn new skills and serve their communities each year. 4-H offers clubs, special interest programs, summer camps, school enrichment, mentors program, after-school and child care training workshops. Guided by North Carolina Cooperative Extension educators and adult and teen volunteers, 4-H'ers gain knowledge, skills and experience that help them become responsible citizens and leaders.

Each year, NC 4-H recognizes alumni, volunteers, Extension professionals, families and partners whose support has made a lasting impact on 4-H programs across the state.

The 4-H Agent, Mrs. Tara, and Livestock Agent, Mrs. Melissa, could not be prouder of the 15 dedicated youth who poured six weeks of hard work and grit into mastering the skill of showing dairy heifers. From halter-breaking to show prep, and everything in between. That dedication culminated this past weekend at the Down East Dairy Show in Kinston, NC, where every participant showcased their skills, passion, and incredible progress in the ring.

**Hot off the press**

Ally Gilkey was FOURTH high scoring individual at the National Jr Horticultural Contest and the team she was able to be a part of earned FIRST place in the 4-H division.

We are so thankful for Grace Atkins, the Horticulture Agent for Pasquotank County Cooperative Extension for including Ally and welcoming her family into their family for this wonderful event. The opportunity of a lifetime for these kids and Grace, you are helping to make big things happen!

Also congratulations to Jamie-Carol Nettles for coaching Ally locally and starting that spark for plants and horticulture ID. We are blessed with some amazing 4-Hers and 4-H leaders that is for sure 💚💚

Traveling mercies and good luck to two special 4-Hers that have spent time preparing for the most fun projects that start with the letter “H” 💚

Ally Gilkey did amazing at the State Horticulture competition in July and was invited to join a team that was traveling to nationals. They have been reporting back on how much fun they are having and we can’t wait to hear all about it. You make us so proud Ally!!

And Savannah Lamb is showing today at the All American Quarter Horse Congress! We have gotten to know the Lamb family through our Woolpack Sheep Project! Good luck Savannah!

What a day! Our Onslow County families and 4-Hers have done it again…. Mind blowing teamwork, leadership and dedication for a top notch successful Downeast Dairy Project show. We have concluded (and survived) another year 🤪 Thank to our fabulous group and more photos to come. Thank you to Mr. Neil Moye for sharing his love of the dairy industry with us and sharing these great heifers each year, thank you to Mr. Greg Justice for allowing us to take over his cattle farm for a short stay and thank you to Mrs. Melissa Huffman, who we could not do any of this without 😘

The highlight to wrap up our National 4-H week was our fellowship and cook out at the event. Definitely something to repeat next time 💚💚
