Beyond90 We provide walk-in support services, mental health counseling and skills building classes to refugees living in NE Florida. Refugees who are brought to the U.S.

As volunteer friendship partners with World Relief, we helped a family who fled from Ethiopia—a mother and her two twin twenty-one year old sons. Their father was killed by Ethiopian police. They struggled to get work as their only skill was being a tailor. They also struggled learning how to pay their rent and navigate transportation. One day the mother got lost trying to take the bus to English classes and didn’t know how to communicate to anyone her situation. She didn't have a phone so she wandered into a church and somehow communicated to someone the need to borrow a phone and called her sons who knew just enough English to be able to ask someone for transportation and get the address where the church was located. Needless to say this experience scared the mother so much that she refused to take the bus to English again. There are many more stories like this. need longer than a 90 day transition time. Imagine if you had to flee the U.S. and ended up in a country where you didn't know the language and were expected to be self-sufficient in 90 days. Could you do it?

The more you learn, the more you realize how much there is to understand…👀

The word refugee is often surrounded by assumptions, headlines, politics, and misconceptions, but behind that word are real people who have been forced to flee their homes because returning safely simply isn’t an option.

For many, the journey involves years of waiting, extensive vetting, incredible uncertainty, and eventually rebuilding an entire life in a place where the language, systems, culture, and expectations may all be completely unfamiliar.

So we’re going to keep sharing the things that surprised us, the facts many people never hear, and the stories that help put a human face to the word “refugee.”

Literacy Alliance is now offering a citizenship class on our campus, helping refugees and immigrants prepare for the naturalization process. We love seeing them prepare for this important milestone in their journey. 🇺🇸

Their current class is already full, but another class is planned for spring 2027! Check out their website for more details.

To every person who walked through the Refugee Journey Experience with us today, thank you. đź’™

Some followed a child fleeing gang violence, a pregnant mother grieving unimaginable loss, an Afghan interpreter targeted for serving alongside the U.S. military, or a young man whose village was destroyed by war.

Most people think becoming a refugee is simply about leaving home. But the reality is that it can be the beginning of years of uncertainty, impossible decisions, waiting, and rebuilding.

That is what we hoped people would walk away understanding a little more deeply.

We are so incredibly grateful to Emmaus Church - Jacksonville for opening your doors and hosting this experience. Thank you to every volunteer who helped bring it to life, every person who supported it, and every single guest who gave us their time and their hearts.

The Beyond90 Refugee Journey Simulation Experience is almost here, tickets are moving, and ticket sales are about to close.

It’s an opportunity to step into a small piece of a journey that millions of refugees are forced to navigate: making impossible decisions, facing uncertainty, and trying to rebuild a life in a place that may feel completely unfamiliar.

Through an immersive, interactive experience, you’ll move through different stages of the refugee journey and gain a deeper understanding of what happens before arrival, during resettlement, and even after someone has reached safety.
