Clear vision can make a big difference!

When you’re an adult student, poor vision can mean something as simple as mixing up a 3 and an 8 on your GED math exam and having to take it again. Oh no!

A huge thank you to Vision Is Priceless for coming out to provide our students with free vision screenings and reading glasses. In addition, about five students received referrals to their clinic for a free comprehensive eye exam and glasses.

Eye health is so important for all of us, and we’re grateful for partners who help remove barriers and support our students on their educational journey.

The Literacy Alliance students learned more about Credit and Avoiding Scams today with our Bank of America financial literacy team. We have had 3 lunch and learn events this year, and we keep learning new things! Did you know you can freeze your credit report (to reduce the risk of fraud if you don't have any upcoming need for loans or credit checks?) How do you build or rebuild credit? Beware of emails and texts that seem urgent or something too good to be true?

This week, in recognition of Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, the Literacy Alliance's Open Book Series welcomed Daniel Davis, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, for a special “fireside chat” with Marcus Haile, CEO of the Literacy Alliance, and Taylor Wright, a Literacy Alliance GED graduate and current Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) certificate student.

The conversation, “Perspectives on the Talent Pipeline,” highlighted an important connection: as Jacksonville continues to grow, we need a skilled, prepared workforce to support new businesses, existing employers, and continued economic expansion.

At the Literacy Alliance, we believe that investing in adults is an investment in our entire community. In addition to GED preparation, we offer several free career-focused certificate programs, including:

Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA), Computer Skills Certification, and ServSafe Food Protection

These programs give students opportunities to build practical skills, earn industry-recognized credentials, and take meaningful steps toward greater economic self-sufficiency and mobility.

When adults have access to education and career pathways, families and communities benefit. Our goal is not only to help individuals improve their quality of life and achieve their career goals, but also to help build the skilled workforce Jacksonville needs to grow, prosper, and thrive.

We are proud to be part of Jacksonville’s talent pipeline and even prouder of the students who are building their futures one achievement at a time.

We are celebrating the power of lifelong learning at the Literacy Alliance with Adult Education and Family Literacy Week and National GED Day! To make adult education truly accessible, our hybrid classes and tutoring adapt to our students' busy lives. We provide the laptops, cameras, and materials our students and volunteers need to thrive online and in person.

This flexibility allows pairs like Khloe and Lara to make incredible strides. They meet twice a week for GED prep, recently bringing geometry to life by using a soda can to calculate the surface area of a cylinder!

Volunteer Lara shared, "It's been a privilege to watch my student grow in confidence as her academic skills begin to flourish! I'm so excited for all the doors that will open for her as a result of her hard work. She's got what it takes to achieve all her goals, and I'm thrilled to be on this journey with her!"

Back-to-school days look very different for adult learners with children.

At the Literacy Alliance, we recognize that parents are the child's first teacher. But, we also recognize that parents are often learners themselves, and the whole family deserves support to reach their learning goals.

Happy Adult Education and Family Literacy (AEFL) Week!

This week, we’re raising awareness of the importance of adult education and family literacy and celebrating the people who are building brighter futures through learning.

At the Literacy Alliance of Northeast Florida, our mission is to improve self-sufficiency, economic mobility, and quality of life for adults through continuing education and literacy skill-building. We provide personalized, flexible, accessible, and goal-based tutoring and small-group instruction to help learners reach their goals.

We offer in-person and online learning opportunities, including: GED preparation, English language learning, health, financial, and family literacy and certification programs to help students enter the workforce. When you’re ready to start a new chapter, we’re here to help.

The Literacy Alliance is grateful for the AmeriCorps members who serve our organization and students every day. Today, they extended that spirit of service to the broader community by participating in the Jacksonville Meal Pack Event honoring the 25th Anniversary of 9/11.

Corey is working toward his GED diploma and attends class regularly. Like many adult learners, he needs a little extra one-on-one support. That’s where Rachel, his tutor, comes in!

Since June, Corey and Rachel have been meeting once a week at the library. Recently, they decided it was time for Corey to get his own library card so he could access the many reading resources and materials the library has to offer. Rachel renewed her card, too!

What a great idea and what a wonderful goal accomplished!
