Southwest Volunteer Fire Department was established in the summer of 1959 to help the citizens of the Southwest Community with the fire needs of its day. Our department has grown to be one of rich tradition, comradery, high call volume, along with the desire to provide highest level of service by a mainly all volunte

er force. We have accomplished this because of the leaders of our past, while focusing on the future, with the goal of being fiscally responsible to the citizens we serve. Our agency provides fire protection to close to 13,000 citizens, covering just shy of 30 square miles. We have three major roads in our district that provide much of the transportation routes for citizens traveling into the City of Jacksonville, NC daily. In addition to these major roads, our agency provides fire protection to a large commercial base including numerous apartment communities, and 5 public schools. We love having new members join our team if you are interested in becoming a neighbor that is helping a neighbor email us at

Today, we pause to remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy every day, and their courage will never be forgotten.

As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, may we also take a moment to honor the fallen, support their families, and reflect on the true meaning of this day.

β€œGreater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” β€” John 15:13 (ESV)

From all of us at Southwest Volunteer Fire Department, we thank those who made the ultimate sacrifice and all who continue to serve our country and communities with honor.

BURN BAN REMAINS IN EFFECT

APRIL 24, 2026

Onslow County Emergency Services and local law enforcement have responded to 60 calls for service related to outdoor fires, grass fires, smoke investigations, and fires threatening structures since the county initiated a burn ban on March 21, 2026.

The burn ban remains in effect for Onslow County, meaning no open burning at all until conditions improve for Onslow County. Open burning includes burning leaves, branches, or other plant material. In all cases, burning trash, lumber, tires, newspaper, plastics, or other non-vegetative material is illegal.

Current weather conditions, including increased wind and elevated fire danger, continue to create a serious risk for fire spread.

Important update: Even permits previously issued by the state are no longer valid under the ban.

Please use caution and help prevent unnecessary fire emergencies by avoiding any outdoor burning until conditions improve. We will share updates as soon as restrictions are lifted.

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.
