The 61st Annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival in Fernandina Beach is in the books! Saturday was a wash out but Sunday was glorious and the crowd was huge! The incoming president of the Jacksonville Watercolor Society, Ted Head, is pictured here in his booth of oil paintings (his other passion) for the last time as he'll be retiring from doing art festivals after 20 years to focus on watercolor instruction. Thank you, Ted Head, for your masterful instruction and entertaining demonstration for the Jacksonville Watercolor Society's April meeting! You showed us how to use value and shapes and with just 4 colors you created a beautiful painting of a duck in water. We're especially grateful to you for stepping in this month on short notice because of unforeseen circumstances.

Thank you to Cypress Village for their phenomenal hospitality!

In May, the Jacksonville Watercolor Society will hold their annual Social Event with lots of fun activities and wonderful food.

Join us on April 28, 2026 for Ted Head's program "Feeling Ducky.“

Ted Head will be painting a white duck using just 4 colors, focusing on one of the most important principles of watercolor—strong values. When painting something white, it’s not about adding more color but it’s about carefully observing and developing the darker shapes that surround the light. By pushing contrast and simplifying the palette, we can create a convincing sense of form, depth, and luminous light. This approach not only keeps the painting fresh and unified, but also shows how powerful value alone can be in bringing a subject to life.

Reminder: The April meeting also includes election of the JWS Board for 2026/2027 term and the ratification of the 2026 JWS By-Laws updates (see details on page 3 of April Newsletter of why the updates are needed and what was updated.)

Come early at 5:30 to socialize with fellow artists and enjoy the refreshments generously provided by Cypress Village.
