It takes a village to raise a child is an old African saying, which seems to be more appropriate in the raising of a challenged child. The mission is to continue to offer free educational seminars and offer Emotional support to the families of the mentally challenged loved ones so they don't feel they are alone with their problems. As physicians, the close experiences with the different aspects of
the community have prompted us to launch a non- profit organization called the Motherscry on
November 14 th. 2010, in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr.Uma EyyunniMD ,an otolaryngologist from St.Augustine, Dr.Ravi Kancha,M.DPhD,an Internist from Jacksonville with philanthropy as his mission and Dr.Anjali Pathak,M.D a psychiatrist with vast experience, with several other close friends took the first step in this long journey. With community awareness and education into mental health issues as the main focus, the first program was addressed by teen agers , discussing the challenges of dual cultures, among the immigrant generation, whose parental roots are still in South Asian countries. However as the time progressed, we realized that the developmental challenges like Autism captured our attention. That brought on the opportunity to approach the specialists in the fields of child developmental mile stones, hyperactivity and attention deficit, giving free educational seminars. We hold quarterly educational seminars and to date they addressed subjects like Anxiety disorders, Depression, Bullying in schools and Dementia. Various specialists in Psychiatry, Psychology and School counselors have been generous with their time that they devoted to our educational ventures. We continue to place our focus on community awareness and dispelling the stigma associated with mental illness. Besides this, working with a small group of artists of Rasajhari, meaning a stream of emotions, we presented two fundraiser s to date. Experimenting with the lyrics in English rendered by Dr. Uma Eyyunni, set to music by Srinivasa Bharadwaja Kishore, of Tallahassee, the dance ballet based on Buddha, the universal peace messenger was presented by Kalaivani school of Indian classical dance based in Atlanta, Georgia, in November 2011
Part of the funds collected were donated to the National Alliance on Mental Illness NAMI of Duval & St. John's counties, to sponsor the walk in Orlando. A part of the funds was also donated to the center for Autism & related disorders CARD affiliated to the university of Florida, and we hope to do the same this year too. On Dec 8th 2013 ,at the Parker auditorium, Bolles middle school, Jacksonville, Fl.we presented an English musical play Swami Vivekananda, a universal missionary, who spread the message of courage & physical strength, attending the Parliament of religions in Chicago in 1893.
