SUMMER SEXUAL HEALTH: INFECTION CONTROL STEPS

Welcome everyone.

Summer is a season of travel, celebrations, vacations, and meeting new people. While sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) occur year-round, increased social activities during the summer can create more opportunities for exposure.

Today we’ll discuss practical infection control steps that can help protect your health and the health of others.

STEP 1: ABSTAIN WHEN APPROPRIATE
Abstinence is the only method that completely prevents sexual transmission of STIs. Choosing not to engage in sexual activity is a valid and healthy option.

STEP 2: PRACTICE MUTUAL MONOGAMY
Being in a mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and is free of infection can significantly reduce risk.

STEP 3: RECOGNIZE THE WARNING SIGNS
Common symptoms may include:
• Unusual discharge
• Burning during urination
• Sores, blisters, or rashes
• Pelvic pain

Remember: Many STIs have no symptoms at all.

STEP 4: GET TESTED REGULARLY
Routine screening helps identify infections early and reduces the risk of spreading them to others.

STEP 5: SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION WITHOUT FEAR OR SHAME
Sexual health is healthcare. If you notice symptoms or believe you may have been exposed, seek professional medical care promptly. Early treatment can prevent serious complications.

KEY MESSAGE
Protect yourself. Protect your partner. Protect your future.

Knowledge, prevention, testing, and timely treatment are the most effective infection control tools available.

☀️ Let’s start off to a good summer by protecting ourselves from common pool illnesses! 🏊🏾‍♀️💜

Healthy habits matter — wear flip-flops, don’t share towels or water bottles, dry your ears after swimming, and always keep your gear clean. Small steps can help prevent infections and keep everyone safe all season long!

Stay healthy. Stay clean. Enjoy the summer! 🌊🩴🧼

In today’s lesson, we’re exploring Vibrio — a group of bacteria commonly found in warm coastal and brackish waters like the St. John’s River in Jacksonville, Florida. As swimmers, athletes, and visitors continue to enjoy the riverfront and participate in events like competitions, understanding the health risks connected to water quality has become more important than ever.

Vibrio infections can happen through open cuts, swallowed water, or exposure to contaminated environments, especially during the hotter months when bacteria levels rise. While Jacksonville’s waterways are beautiful and culturally important, concerns about pollution and “dirty water” conditions remind us why microbiology and environmental awareness matter.

This lesson will break down what Vibrio is, how it affects swimmers, why it thrives in certain water conditions, and what safety steps everyone should know before entering the water. Because in microbiology — and in life — success is in the details. Success is in the details. 🔬💜🧡
