Today, we celebrate a special day in the history of the city we proudly call home! On June 15, 1822, the City of Jacksonville was officially founded, marking the beginning of a rich history rooted in resilience, growth, and community along the beautiful St. Johns River.
Did you know? Before it became Jacksonville, the area was known as “Cowford” because cattle were herded across the narrowest point of the St. Johns River here—a natural crossing that helped shape early settlement and trade in the region.
Named in honor of Andrew Jackson, Florida’s first territorial governor and future U.S. President, Jacksonville has grown from a small frontier settlement into the vibrant city we know today.
As members of the Jacksonville Chapter NSDAR, we are proud to celebrate the history, heritage, and patriotic spirit of our great city. Happy Founding Day, Jacksonville! 🇺🇸
