"RETALIATION FOR GRACE"
(God's love in me seeks my enemy's good)
(Matthew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;)
This verse is a commandment from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, where He commands His followers to depart from the natural human instinct for retaliation. Instead of returning hostility with hostility, Jesus calls believers to display active, unconditional goodwill (a love of benevolence, rather than mere affection) toward those who mistreat or oppose us.
*Love your enemies: Choosing to treat adversaries with dignity, respect regardless of their actions. (Luke 6:27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,) And (1 Peter 3:9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.)
*Bless them that curse you: Responding to verbal abuse, insults, or curses with kind words and grace, rather than insults. (Luke 6:28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.) And (Romans 12:14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.)
*Do good to them that hate you: Actively seeking opportunities to help and show kindness to those who wish us harm. (Proverbs 25:21,22 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.) And (Luke 6:35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.)
*Pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you: Bringing your persecutors to God in prayer. This shifts our perspective, helps release bitterness, and asks for their hearts to change and align with God. (Proverbs 24:17 Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:) And (Luke 6:36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.)
Remember, Jesus is specifically referencing and correcting the cultural interpretation of that day. This teaching directly challenges the flawed humanistic "an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth" which we should be practicing today to mirror the perfect character of God's grace.✨️
Beloved, stay encouraged in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ ✝️
