These two are already much happier! They were rescued off FB marketplace last Thursday living in inadequate conditions but thankfully don’t seem to have any obvious issues besides being overweight and poor flyers due to lack of exercise and poor diet.

The last photo was their prior cage which was quite dirty, didn’t allow for much movement at all and had been hung from the ceiling as decoration based off the chains and hooks attached

Our rescue Daisy went for a vet checkup today! She did not behave, her offenses included dramatic screaming, attempted escape, squirming like a worm, and biting the vet tech EXTRA hard not once but twice!

Sadly this is not news I wanted to share, but Rex has unexpectedly passed the rainbow bridge. He had already been showing some signs of illness as well as plucking when I adopted him, and had seen the vet recently. He was put on some antibiotics and was keeping weight, and had better energy and appetite within days after the visit, but we were not able to test super extensively due to him not being at a great weight for more blood drawing.

His girlfriend Daisy will be getting a new companion in the coming weeks as she has a clean bill of health. I’ve allowed her to say goodbye to him as they were quite bonded and hopefully the loss doesn’t effect her severely.

After 3 months of patience Camaro (Blue rescue budgie) has OFFICIALLY TAKEN FLIGHT!!!

While he’s still far from fully flighted, his few new feathers have grown in enough that with difficulty and only a short distance (2 feet) he can officially maintain some lift, therefor is now flying some rather than purely jumping. He’s also learned that if he does fall, or can’t make a jump that he just has to step up and as soon as I’ve closed the distance he wanted, he’ll jump the rest himself.

I’m very glad that he’s accepting this help while also maintaining independence, it’s usually not like this sadly. Most parrots after falling as often as he has become fearful of attempting flying or even a short jump and quickly begin to rely solely on the human, which is then mistaken as the bird being clingy or wanting to spend lots of time with them.

The finches had to come inside awhile ago and I was finally able to get them some perch stands built allowing safer and more active free roaming time!

My birds have been raised fully flighted so even without these they get around pretty well, but for birds who were previously clipped and are clumsier these are amazing to give them an easy landing spot to help build coordination and strength.

Not so gentle PSA, for the love of god please stop buying birds (or any animal) from a petstore only to rehome them a month later. Parakeets despite being small have the same needs as larger parrots and are a 10-15 year commitment, not something pretty to get rid of as soon as you’re bored or because you didn’t do your research beforehand (petstore or basic google guides don’t count, they’re out of date 99% of the time.)

Most parrots especially budgies specifically go through up to 7+ homes in their first 2 years of life alone. These two are BABIES at barely 4 months old and already at #2 with me. On top of that they’ve been physically disabled and endangered by being clipped before even having the chance to learn flight.

They need big cages, toys to destroy which makes mess and not just seed, they need veggies pellets sprouts etc etc. On top of that, large chain petstores like PetSmart get all of their animals from MILL BREEDERS, it’s been proven and known for years now. Buy your pet food there, toys or whatever but never support their live animal sales. 99% of their animals end up neglected due to the false information they provide and the improper enclosures & toys sold/promoted for said pets many of which can actually kill the bird.
