I wish they could talk.
I want to know what he thinks.
I want to know how he feels.
I want to know if it’s time, or if we wait a little longer.
💔🐴For those who may not know BUCK’s story, he is 27 years old and came to us as a retired racehorse with a severe stifle injury that never properly healed. He could never be ridden, but he became something far more important. He became an ambassador for kindness, patience, and connection. For years, BUCK has quietly helped people fall in love with horses simply by existing gently in their space.
This past year has been a roller coaster for him. We almost lost him last year, but after adjusting medications and management, he seemed to make a bit of a comeback. But the truth is, he still hurts. We can see it. He is currently on significant pain management support, and lately we’ve found ourselves standing at the difficult intersection of quality of life versus quantity of life. 💔These decisions are never black and white. If they were, they would be easier.
What makes it harder is knowing how deeply loved he is. Everyone has opinions like wait longer, don’t wait, try this, try that. And while we truly appreciate how much people care for him, at the end of the day the responsibility of making the decision rests with us alongside our trusted veterinary team.
💗So for now, we are listening. We are taking quiet moments to just stand beside him like today. Listening to BUCK. Listening to his body. Listening to his spirit.
We will continue sharing his journey over the coming weeks as we process what the next steps may look like for him. And we will trust that whatever decision is made will come from a place of deep love, respect, and compassion for the life he has lived.
💙🐴❤️Right now, we are just soaking in moments like this one, BUCK standing in the grass beneath a beautiful blue sky, simply being BUCK.
