For the past 18 years, our core program has been a sanctuary providing lifelong, professional care for lemurs rescued from the pet trade, roadside attractions, and other inappropriate environments. Today, we are excited to announce that the Endangered Primate Foundation is now doing business as Wild Hearts Lemur Sanctuary. This new name reflects our commitment to helping every lemur live wild at heart.
The lemurs who come to us have often endured physical and psychological neglect, improper housing, and social deprivation. As a result, we specialize in both physical and behavioral rehabilitation. Lemurs arriving with illness or injury receive expert veterinary care, often for the first time in their lives. Those suffering from muscle atrophy after years of confinement in small cages are provided spacious indoor and outdoor habitats where they can rebuild strength and regain natural mobility.
Many also arrive with significant social skill deficits caused by abnormal rearing practices and long-term isolation. Through carefully managed introductions and individualized socialization plans, we help each lemur develop healthy social relationships at a pace appropriate for their unique needs.
We believe the only way lemurs can truly thrive in human care is through the closest possible approximation of life in the wild including dynamic environments, complex enrichment, and appropriate social groupings.
At Wild Hearts Lemur Sanctuary, our mission remains rooted in compassion, rehabilitation, and respect for the natural behaviors that make lemurs who they are. The name may be new, but our commitment is unchanged: every lemur deserves to live wild at heart.
