Saturday, the Florida Civil Rights Museum, Inc. joined family members, elected officials, community leaders, and friends in Evinston, Florida outside of Gainesville, as we unveiled our Senator Geraldine F. Thompson Florida Civil Rights and Education Heritage Trail Historical Marker in honor of the late Lloyd W. Johnson, Sr. The ceremony also included the Alachua County Commission, who renamed SE 185th Avenue in Johnson's honor.

The Florida Civil Rights Museum, Inc. was elated to unveil an historical marker in Orlando at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, honoring the late Senator Geraldine F. Thompson. Thank you to the Thompson family, community members, elected officials, and everyone who came out to participate!

🕯️ With heartfelt sympathy, we announce the passing of our Co-Director’s mother, Ms. Delois Hollinger, 66, of Tallahassee, Florida, who entered eternal rest on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Hollinger family and all who knew and loved Ms. Hollinger. May God’s unfailing love, peace, and comfort surround them during this difficult time, and may cherished memories bring strength and hope in the days ahead.

The Florida Civil Rights Museum, Inc. thanks the Tallahassee Democrat for highlighting our historical marker unveiling in partnership with Leon County Schools. The unveiling will take place in a single event on Thursday, August 27, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at the Aquilina C. Howell Center, 3955 W. Pensacola St. It encompasses four (4) separate markers, to be placed at Lively Technical College, two at the Original Lincoln High School and the Devurn H. Glenn District Administrative Complex. Today during their regularly scheduled meeting, the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners voted to designate Southeast 185 Avenue in Evinston, Florida as "Lloyd W. Johnson, Sr. Memorial Avenue," at the request of the Florida Civil Rights Museum, Inc. On Saturday, August 15, 2026 at 11:00 a.m., the FCRM will honor Mr. Johnson with an historical marker along its Florida Civil Rights and Education Heritage Trail at Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church, 8216 SE 185 Ave. Mr. Johnson is the first African-American to be so recognized in Evinston.
