What's your afternoon slump time? For most people it's between 1pm-3pm. As a Gut Health Nutrition Specialist I have studied some reasons why we go through the afternoon slump. It can come from eating a high carb btreakfast, lunch, stress, dehydration or low levels of iron and b12. To keep from experiencing the slump make sure your breakfast and lunch has protein, fiber, good carbs, and healthy fats.
Here are some snack ideas that may help you prevent or get through that afternoon slump:
1.Add nuts, seeds and plant protein to a fruit and veggie smoothie.
2.You can also add seeds, nuts, and granola to a plain cup of protein based yogurt. Plain yogurt has way less sugar than fruit flavored yogurt which usually has about 8-15 grams of sugar added. 8-15 grams of sugar is about 4 teaspoons of sugar in a small yogurt container. If you don't enjoy plain yogurt add your own fresh or frozen fruit, sweetness and fuel from natural sugar.
3. Fruit with nut butter, My favorite is peanut butter and banana boat slices. Occassionally I like to switch things up with a golden delicious apple and homemade almond butter or cashew butter.
4. My all time favorite is homemade hummus and veggies with anytime bagel seasoning sprinkled on top,
The fun part is to try something new, you maybe pleasently surprised with a new favorite snack.
Next, we will discuss types of protein, fiber, different types of fats and types of carbs.
