Reflections from Our Civic Engagement Roundtable: Equity in Action

Last week, Jax Hub convened a community discussion with voices from across Jacksonville to discuss exploring the “E” in DEI—Equity—through the lens of civic engagement.

We anchored our dialogue around material realities: food deserts, housing instability, underfunded schools, and unequal access to capital. Speakers painted vivid pictures of students navigating hunger, homelessness, and academic labels—not because of lack of potential, but because their basic needs aren’t met.

We were reminded that zip codes can be encumbering for many: where you live dictates the nutrition you are able to obtain. From the financial frontlines, speakers described how algorithms determined their access to credit.

In discussion of immaterial barriers, access to “the room,” and the confidence to speak up in systems not designed for everyone was a pertinent area of concern for participants.

“Equity means more than opportunity; it means knowing what to do when that opportunity comes.”

Follow along for our upcoming event in July and subsequent events that will take place through October.

Thank you to all who attended and participated in this printable discussion.

The Jacksonville Global Shapers are excited to host an important community conversation about strengthening civic engagement through a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Event: The Deeper Dive: Civic Engagement Beyond Election Day
Date: Wednesday, June 18
Time: 7pm - 8:30pm
Location: Redeemer Episcopal Church, 7500 Southside Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32256, USA
Duration: 90 minutes
We will approach this dynamic from two angles. One being that of material conditions - the way inequality materializes in tangible ways that we can see and feel. The other will be non-material conditions - the information inequalities that encumber people’s ability to access information.
Discussion Topics Include:
    •    Removing barriers to civic participation
    •    Exploring avenues to instil equality and equity in the community
    •    Strengthening voter engagement and community organizing efforts
    •
What to Expect:
This interactive session will feature a group discussion following the roundtable portion of the event and collaborative development of actionable next steps. Light refreshments will be provided.
Questions? Contact Alphaeus Hanson at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected])

P.S. Can’t attend but know someone who should? Please feel free to forward this invitation to other community leaders and engaged citizens who would benefit from this important conversation. 💙
