Doc and Mansley, two of our Ranch Camp legends, are demonstrating the fine art of equine hydration. No fancy water bottles or straws needed here, folks!
Horses use their powerful lips and specialized muscles of the mouth to create suction, drawing water up into their mouths before swallowing. An average 1,000-pound horse can drink 5 to 10 gallons of water a day!

Doc and Mansley, thanks for the demonstration!

“Sophie and Domingo sitting in a tree…G-R -O- O-M- I- N- G, first comes love…”

…Seriously though, mutual grooming is when two animals groom each other instead of just grooming themselves.
• They use their teeth and lips to nibble, scratch, or gently bite the other horse’s coat
• They focus on hard-to-reach spots the other horse can’t easily clean alone, especially the withers (the ridge between the shoulder blades), neck, back, and base of the mane
Why horses do it
• Bonding & friendship: It’s a clear sign the horses like and trust each other. Horses that mutual-groom regularly are usually close companions.
• Practical cleaning: It removes dirt, loose hair, parasites, and itchiness from places they can’t reach well by themselves.
• Social calm: The rhythmic scratching is relaxing and helps reduce tension in the herd.
So when Domingo and Sophie are grooming each other, they’re not just being helpful, they’re showing affection and reinforcing their friendship in classic horse language.

All lanes open on Stony Lake Road, except the one where Storer Camps mini donkey “Jackpot”, is creating a major backup by parking his itchy behind on the work truck. Expect delays until the itch clears. Back to you!”

Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes before you climb into the saddle for a public trail ride?

It takes so much more than simply catching a horse and saddling up!

Our professional wranglers start with the round-up, followed by body and health assessments, feeding, grooming and tack inspections. Then comes the careful selection of which horses will be paired with each rider, while making sure no horse is overworked.

Once the ride begins, our wranglers are constantly watching, troubleshooting, communicating and putting safety first. Every rider receives safety instruction, and every horse and rider combination is thoughtfully considered.

When the ride is over, the work isn’t. Horses are untacked, cooled out, brushed down, checked over again and returned to their pastures and herd mates.

There is a lot of knowledge, experience, teamwork and genuine love for horses behind every trail ride.

It’s hard work, but it is also an incredibly rewarding job.

Come on out, meet our wranglers and horses, you’ll be as impressed as I am every day.

Success on the Trail! Our talented Wranglers completed a beautiful one-hour trek with our new donated horses, riding from the North side of camp all the way to Ranch Camp.
In the hands of our skilled team, these horses are truly finding their “Y” in our storied horse program. They pushed bravely through the woods, past the lake, and over the bridge, places they’ve never seen before. With the trust and respect they’ve built with their wranglers, the sky is truly the limit!
What an incredible milestone for our herd and our program. ❤️🐎
