There is so much to discover about historic preservation, including the history of the preservation movement itself. Historic Preservation Month is a time to celebrate the places, stories, and traditions that connect us to our past and shape our communities today. At the federal level, historic preservation provides valuable tools that help protect the places that matter most, not only to our local communities but to our nation as well. Some of these tools include the following:
National Historic Preservation Act
Section 106
Section 4(f) of the U.S. Department of Transportation Act of 1966
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
The National Register of Historic Places
The National Park Service
State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs)
Tribal Historic Preservation Offices (THPOs)
The Antiquities Act of 1906
Federal Historic Tax Credit
