Jackson is facing a growing food desert, and our residents deserve better.

As we watch neighboring cities continue to attract new grocery stores, restaurants, and retail development, many Jackson neighborhoods are being left behind. Families are forced to drive outside the city just to buy fresh groceries, which means our tax dollars are being spent in surrounding communities instead of being reinvested here in Jackson.

This isn’t just an inconvenience—it’s an issue of quality of life, public health, and economic development. Every family should have reasonable access to fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, and other essential groceries without having to travel miles outside the city.

Our community is not asking for another discount retail store. We need full-service grocery stores that provide healthy food options, create jobs, and strengthen our local economy. Grocery stores attract additional businesses, increase investment, and give residents another reason to shop, work, and spend money in Jackson.

The City of Jackson must make grocery store recruitment and retention a top priority by working with developers, offering incentives where appropriate, and partnering with the private sector to bring quality grocery retailers back into underserved neighborhoods. This is an investment in the future of our city.

Jackson residents deserve the same opportunities as those in surrounding communities. We should not have to leave our city just to buy groceries. It is time to prioritize grocery stores over more discount retailers and invest in the basic needs of our citizens.
