Every Journey Begins with a Story
Sometimes the most meaningful chapters in life begin in ways we never expect.
This is one of those stories.
Recently, our friends at Finally Home Farms connected us with Chris and Janet Henry. Like so many friendships that begin through a shared mission of serving others, it quickly became clear that this was more than just a conversation about horsesโit was about people.
Earlier this year, Janet experienced a significant medical event that changed life for their family. Thankfully, she has been making an inspiring recovery, and with each passing day she continues to regain strength. As they focus on her health, ongoing therapy, and the opportunities that lie ahead, Chris and Janet have also begun looking toward a new chapter in life togetherโone that they hope will include traveling and enjoying new adventures as her recovery continues.
As part of that transition, they made the difficult decision to find loving new homes for some of the animals they have cared for over the years.
Through our mutual friend, Tim Spradlin of Finally Home Farms, they learned about Base Camp Alpha and Black Feather Farm.
When Chris and Janet visited the farm, we walked the pastures together, shared stories, and talked about the future. Before long, it became clear that this wasn't simply about finding a pastureโit was about finding a purpose.
Master Chief, Taco, and Gunny would not simply be moving to another farm.
They would become part of a mission.
At Black Feather Farm, these incredible animals will help us expand the work of Base Camp Alpha by creating meaningful experiences for veterans, first responders, and their families. Horses have an incredible ability to teach patience, build trust, encourage confidence, and create moments of peace that words alone often cannot provide. Alongside them, Taco and Gunny's gentle personalities will bring smiles, laughter, and comfort to visitors of all ages.
Their new home will become a place where relationships are strengthened, resilience is restored, and memories are made.
But before that day arrives, there is still much work to do.
Over the coming weeks, volunteers will help us rebuild fencing, prepare new pastures, construct shelters, and create a safe environment where these animals can thrive. Every fence post, every gate, every shelter, and every helping hand will become part of something much bigger than a construction project.
Together, we are building another opportunity for healing.
To Chris and Janet, thank you.
Thank you for trusting us with Master Chief, Taco, and Gunny. We know this decision was made with great care, and we are honored to become the next chapter in their story. We promise to care for them with the same love and respect that you have shown them throughout their lives.
We also wish you both many wonderful adventures in the years ahead. May the road ahead be filled with healing, joy, and the opportunity to create new memories together.
To everyone following Base Camp Alpha, welcome to the beginning of our Equine Program.
This is more than the arrival of three wonderful animals.
It is the beginning of another chapter in our mission to serve those who have served others.
And we cannot wait to share the journey with all of you.
