WTLS is a nonprofit law firm that exists to fill in the gaps in the justice system that create burdens for low-income and marginalized communities in accessing legal representation. WTLS helps to protect individuals’ access to food, healthcare, housing, and safety. Our attorneys help victims of housing discrimination seek justice and find a home. We help victims of domestic violence obtain orders of protection, create safety plans, and find the peace that they deserve. WTLS helps community members facing unlawful evictions, sexual assault, creditor harassment, financial exploitation, elder abuse, and veterans who need assistance accessing benefits. We believe that everyone deserves equal access to justice, regardless of their level of income.

📢 Social Security & SSI Benefits Are Increasing in 2027

The Social Security Administration has announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027.

✅ Social Security retirement benefits will increase by an average of about $75 per month
✅ SSI recipients will see increased payments beginning December 31, 2026
✅ Social Security benefit increases will begin January 2027

Want to see your COLA notice sooner?

Create a my Social Security account and enroll in paperless notices by November 18 to view your notice online before paper notices are mailed.

West Tennessee Legal Services was honored to attend BHW Estate’s annual Veterans Love Day: S.O.S. (Serving Our Soldiers), a celebration of the men and women who have served our country. 🎖️

For five years, this event has brought our community together through music, fellowship, and appreciation, while highlighting veterans’ need for safe housing and meaningful support.

Thank you to Debra Hogue Brantley and the BHW Estate team for their work providing safe, stable, affordable housing for veterans experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their homes, and for creating a space where veterans know their service is remembered. 💙

Our Restoration of Citizenship Rights Clinic is coming up this Saturday, October 10! 🎉

Join West Tennessee Legal Services for a free clinic to help community members restore their citizenship rights. Volunteer attorneys will be on hand to answer questions and walk you through the process.

We had such a great time with the Howell Edmunds Jackson Inn of Court this month in celebration of Pro Bono Month! 🎉

Huge thanks to the Inn for having WTLS come talk about why pro bono work matters so much for access to justice, and for teaming up with us on a pro bono clinic. It was awesome to see so many folks from the legal community roll up their sleeves and help neighbors who needed it.

Every volunteer hour helps close the justice gap in West Tennessee. Thank you to all the attorneys, judges, and law students who gave their time, and to everyone who helped make it happen! 🙌

Join West Tennessee Legal Services for a virtual CLE on the restoration of citizenship rights, featuring Professor Joy Radice.

This session covers the legal process for restoring voting rights and other civil rights for individuals with felony convictions, including:

✔️ Common challenges clients face

Attorneys will gain practical guidance for helping clients through the process, plus a deeper understanding of the policy and ethical considerations in reentry law.
