Our Church traces its roots in unbroken apostolic succession to first century Antioch, the city in which the disciples of Jesus Christ were first called “Christians” (Acts 11:26). The Christian Church is based in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, who has come in to the world as a man for our salvation. This is the foundational belief of every true Christian. “Orthodox

” means right teaching or right worship, and we understand our Orthodox Christian faith to be the full and right revelation of God’s desire for us to believe in Him, know Him, abide in Him and receive eternal life from Him. Services:

"The Church is more than a “home”, it is a hospital for souls, it is where we go to receive the Body of Christ, and become the Body of Christ. We are blessed with a surge of converts and Orthodox. We must remember that God is the one building this church. He is bringing His people into His Ark, and like Noah we have a duty to participate with him and build the church. We have a duty to continue to deepen our hearts and to extend sacred hospitality to everyone sent here to us by God. In remembrance of those who have gone on before us, we have a duty to build for the future generations of our community, for our children and grandchildren and for those who will come after us." - Dr. Mary Fox

Our fundraising committee kicked off our internal Fundraising Drive today on our new building project! Our first goal is to pay off our mortgage by March. Our Church was full today with dozens of catechumens, and we had a fun day with the tailgate party. Thank God for all of you!

Recap from Dormition Weekend
The liturgical text of the Feast of the Dormition depicts the feast as a Paschal event. The hymns of the feast assert that the Virgin Mary experienced her own personal Pascha by passing through death and rising to eternal life. Being alive in heaven, as a queen and mother of Christ, we, now, can ask her intercessions to help us transform our own forthcoming death into a Paschal victory over death.

In the ecclesiastical tradition, the feast of Dormition of the Theotokos is called the “Summer Pascha.” This name is derived from the fact that the Theotokos experienced her own Pascha; “Passover” from this life into life eternal.

St. John of Damascus confirms the Paschal nature of the Feast of the Dormition by calling the death of the Theotokos: “The Deathless Death”. He calls it the deathless death because of the fact that death resulted in her translation into life eternal, into glorification and union with the Lord. “O how does the source of life pass through death to life? She dies according to the flesh, destroys death by death, and through corruption gains incorruption, and makes her death the source of resurrection.” (St. John of Damascus)

On August 6th in the Feast of the Transfiguration, we celebrate and participate in the joy and light of Christ’s revelation of the glory of the Kingdom (the Church!) to which He invites us! Part of our traditional celebration of the feast is the Blessing of the Grapes (and other fresh fruits and even vegetables). The blessing of grapes is a beautiful reminder of the final transfiguration of all things in Christ. It foreshadows the ultimate flowering and fruitfulness of all creation in God’s Paradise where all will be transformed by the glory of the Lord. Blessed feast!

This week, we honored our choir director, or Protopsalti, Jesse Cox for 12 years service to Christ at St. Nicholas!

Church music is a sacred ministry, incorporating beauty into the worship and education of the Church. Leading the choir means preparing for and being present (or making arrangements) for every service, which Jesse has done so faithfully as our mission parish has grown. Over the last 12 years, Jesse has undertaken education in Byzantine chant, and worked diligently to teach the choir and parish new music, navigating all the new English settings being produced. Under his guidance, our choir has included both the parish children and advanced chanters who want to serve the church. Jesse has served our parish prayerfully, enthusiastically, self-sacrificially for many, many years. We are so grateful for his ministry and leadership!

God grant you many years!

Our Faith and Food Summer Series begins this Wednesday! This June and July we'll be enjoying talks from parishioners on Sacred Living. We'll explore many different ways we find sanctity in our lives, through the lives of the saints, the hymns of the church, and our day to day experience.

We have Vespers (or Paraklesis) at 6 PM on Wednesday nights, followed by a potluck and a talk (from about 7-8 PM). Activities for kids will also be offered. Come pray, eat, and learn together with us this summer!
