Tomorrow is World Hunger Day — a reminder that for hundreds of thousands of Mississippi families, hunger is not just a moment, but a daily reality.

In observance of World Hunger Day, Mississippi Center for Justice invites community members to join us for “Take a Seed, Plant a Seed” tomorrow, May 28, from 12–4 PM at the Indianola Community Wellness Center.

Participants will receive a free bucket plant starter kit — one to take home and one to donate to the local community garden. The event will also feature a live cooking demonstration led by a registered dietician using fresh vegetables and herbs available at the event, along with important information about upcoming SNAP changes and community resources.

We are proud to partner with Mississippi State University Extension Service, State Representative Otis Anthony, the Indianola Community Garden, and local health and justice advocates to help strengthen food access and community wellness across the Delta.

Six years ago, on Memorial Day, George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer in a murder witnessed around the world. His death forced this nation to confront painful truths about race, policing, abuse of power, and the unequal value too often placed on Black lives. Millions marched. Communities organized. Demands for justice echoed across this country and beyond.

Six years later, the fight for accountability, truth, and justice continues. As efforts grow to erase history, silence conversations about race, and roll back hard-fought progress, we remember that real change only happens when we are willing to face uncomfortable truths and continue the work.

Today, Jackson was filled with voices that refuse to be silenced.

People came from every corner of Mississippi and from neighboring states to TAKE A STAND for Black voting rights following the United States Supreme Court’s ruling that weakens protections for Black voters. People of all races, ages, backgrounds, and communities marched through downtown Jackson united in one message: our voices matter, our votes matter, and this fight is far from over.

Thousands showed up. Thousands stood together. Thousands made it clear that we will continue fighting for justice, fairness, and the protection of our democracy.

MCJ staff proudly served as trained legal observers throughout the Day of Action, helping monitor interactions between citizens and law enforcement, assisting with de-escalation efforts, answering questions, and marching alongside the people of Jackson every step of the way.

This work does not end today.

MCJ will continue registering voters, educating Mississippians about their rights, and standing at the forefront of the fight for a more just and equitable nation.

Today’s Supreme Court decision is a troubling reminder that the fight for fair representation is ongoing. By vacating lower court rulings tied to majority-Black districts in Mississippi and protections for Native American voters in North Dakota, the Court has once again placed voting rights protections under scrutiny in light of Callais.

In Mississippi, communities had already begun to see the impact of fairer representation at the ballot box. Those gains matter. Representation matters. And attempts to weaken the political voice of historically marginalized communities will always have real consequences for our democracy.

When the voices of marginalized communities are under attack, silence is not an option.

Listen to Harya Tarekegn, Director of Advocacy & Policy at Mississippi Center for Justice, discuss Mississippi redistricting, what’s at stake for Black representation, and how MCJ is standing in the gap to protect the voices and voting rights of Mississippians.

Voting rights advocates say they will continue pushing for redistricting reform despite the governor’s decision to cancel a special session.

The Mississippi Center for Justice and other groups plan to hold a day of action May 20, the date originally scheduled for the special session. The group plans to start with a 10 a.m. press conference at the Old Capitol, followed by a march to the new Capitol and a rally at noon.

Seventy-two years after Brown v. Board of Education, the fight for equal access to quality education continues.

While the landmark decision declared segregated schools unconstitutional, many communities still face deep inequities in funding, resources, opportunity, and educational outcomes.

The promise of Brown was never just about desegregation — it was about dignity, opportunity, and ensuring every child has the chance to thrive. The work is not finished.
