While Jackie Robinson's story is well-known, Willie O'Ree's historic role in breaking down racial barriers in hockey often goes unrecognized. 66 years ago, O'Ree made history as the first black player in the NHL, paving the way for diversity in the sport. 🏒

Let’s check the stats!

In 2023, the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), “the nation’s report card,” showed that not even half (43%) of fourth graders in the U.S. scored at or above a proficient level in reading.

Unfortunately, for marginalized students, the numbers are much worse with only 17% of Black students, 21% of Latino students, 11% of students with disabilities, and 10% of multilingual learners reading proficiently by fourth grade.

If you’ve been following our “Did You Know” series of posts, you’ve got the answer 😉

Let’s give our future leaders books where they are positively represented and watch them connect and engage!

If you’re ready to be a part of the solution, you’re in the right place 😉

Gift the little ones in your life an LBB book today 🤎

Free Tutoring and GED Services is a Black-led organization that provides free tutoring support in Jackson County for pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade students and GED (General Equivalency Diploma) students. They also provide mentoring services, soft-skills training, and free meals each week.

The cost of tutoring services can be a barrier to those who need tutoring, but do not have the resources to pay. Their tutors are available to help students with their educational goals regardless of economic status.

Tutoring is held every Tuesday, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. throughout the school year, and volunteers are always welcome. Their services are located at Southside Church, in the William Saunders Fellowship Hall, 419 East High Street, Jackson, MI 49203.
