Jackson Hole Trout Unlimited joined the Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation to build Beaver Dam Analogs (BDAs) on Trail Creek, which was affected by the Pack Fire in 2024.

BDAs are human-made structures that mimic natural beaver dams and help restore damaged, eroded, or incised streams. By slowing the flow of water, BDAs allow the surrounding floodplain to act like a sponge - absorbing and temporarily storing water and groundwater. Following a fire, these structures can also capture sediment, ash, and debris flowing off the burned landscape. Without them, this material can wash into small headwater streams, burying critical habitat for fish and aquatic insects, reducing available food, and decreasing dissolved oxygen levels.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for The Salmonfly Project presentation on September 22nd!

The Salmonfly Project has been doing incredible work throughout the Rocky Mountain region, including important research on the Upper Snake River. Jackson Hole Trout Unlimited is proud to support their Upper Snake River research through funding and by helping coordinate volunteers for sampling events in the Jackson area.

We appreciate everyone who came out to learn about the current invert sampling and how the Snake inverts compare to other regionally important rivers. To find out more about The Salmonfly Project and their research, visit their website: thesalmonflyproject.org

JHTU partnered with Wyoming Game and Fish Department to coordinate volunteers for a fish rescue on the Snake River yesterday, October 6th.

Following the annual Jackson Lake Dam ramp down, our team and partners floated stretches of the Snake River from Pacific Creek to Wilson bridge to look for isolated pools where fish may have become stranded as water levels dropped. Volunteers worked alongside WGFD, Snake River Fund, and partners to safely capture and return stranded fish to the main stem of the river.

This rescue is an important part of the ramp down monitoring and helps JHTU, WGFD, and our partners to better understand where fish strandings occur and how changing river conditions affect fish movement and habitat. The information we collect can help inform future water management and ramp down planning.

Hosted by Slow Food in the Tetons and Trout Unlimited and presented by Loop Tackle and Cox Outdoors, this year’s Wild Fish Slow Food Film Festival features stories stretching from the Upper Snake River Basin to Iceland.

This lineup kicks off close to home with films from the Upper Snake River Basin, featuring stories from the Snake River Headwaters to the Lower 4 Snake River dams.

Then, the stories expand to the Klamath River and its dam removals, Atlantic salmon conservation in Iceland, the fight against the Pebble Mine, and the powerful role of indigenous leadership in conservation.
