Coombs Outdoors Coombs Outdoors envisions a community in which youth feel supported, connected, and inspired.

We empower local youth to grow and thrive by reducing barriers to outdoor recreation through programs, mentorship, and community building. People come from around the world to experience Jackson Hole’s iconic public lands and recreation opportunities, but not all locals have that same access. Many hard-working families experience barriers to outdoor recreation culture. Coombs Outdoors believes all youth growing up in Jackson should have the chance to build confidence and community through outdoor adventures. Coombs reduces barriers to outdoor recreation by providing affordable, accessible, year-round outdoor programming from Kindergarten through high school. In the winter, participants ski, snowboard, and Nordic ski with lessons and programs for all ability levels. In the summer, Coombs camps and clinics give kids the opportunity to hike, climb, bike, raft, camp, and more on Jackson's surrounding public lands. 👋 Enrollment Coordinator: this part-time role is the welcoming first voice of Coombs Outdoors for prospective and returning participants and their families. This bilingual position manages the full participant intake process ensuring that every family, regardless of language or background, receives clear, timely, and supportive guidance through our application process.
💪 Empower Program Manager: this full-time position develops and manages all aspects of the Empower Program, which provides high school participants with internship opportunities, professional and personal development workshops, and access to outdoor recreation.

Meet Natalie: Spouse, Parent, Family Outdoor Advocate

Natalie is a mom of two young children and wife to Carlos, a dedicated restaurant employee. As a team, they share in helping their family thrive.

This year, Natalie noticed that Carlos was stressed and exhausted from working two jobs. She felt it too with the demands of full-time child care and little time to spend time together as a family. An outing with Camina Conmigo provided rejuvenation. It gave Natalie an idea. What if she, Carlos and the kids spent more time together in nature?

Camina Conmigo recently merged with Coombs Outdoors and family outings are a growing part of its offerings. This summer, Natalie’s family paddleboarded with Camina Conmigo.

Coombs kids are ready for the long haul.

By the time they graduate, Coombs participants have the skills, confidence, and support systems they need to be resilient, happy, and successful adults. Coombs alumni are pursuing degrees, dream jobs, and chances to give back.

The Coombs Outdoors Empower program provides college readiness, professional development, and career exploration programming for high school students. Offerings include resume/cover letter workshops, college application and scholarship support, college visit trips, career panels and job shadowing, and competitively paid internships at a variety of local organizations and businesses. Participants explore options for their future, build skills and experience, and consider options that once felt inaccessible.

Meet Vidor! 🙌 As long as anyone can remember, Vidor has been a part of Coombs. He began as an energetic 6 year old Activate kid and has grown into a thoughtful teenager, excellent navigator, and budding astronomer. Early this summer Vidor took part in our first ever Leadership Trip to take on more responsibility, but only because his mom encouraged him. The first thing he said to our staff when he got back from the backpacking trip was, "can I sign up for another one?" Now he’s excited to become an intern leading younger kids on trips in the backcountry, and it’s clear the motivation is all his own.

After years exploring and growing with Coombs Outdoors, kids move up the path from beginner to experienced, and eventually to leader. Interns and alumni take the Coombs journey full circle - purposefully and intentionally owning new responsibilities and becoming role models for the next generation of Coombs kids.

Our Empower program provides opportunities for high schoolers to explore colleges and careers, build professional skills, gain leadership experience, and give back. This year we were proud to have a record number of high schoolers and alumni serve as interns, volunteer mentors, and staff leaders.
💪
To engage more participants and provide an on-ramp for Empower programming, this summer we piloted a new Leadership Program for 9-10th graders (photo 2). A group of 6 young high schoolers went on a leadership training trip with staff from Coombs and NOLS, and then served as junior instructors for 1-2 backpacking trips, practicing their skills leading younger participants. These experiences created an important stepping stone toward future internships and leadership opportunities at Coombs and beyond. We look forward to building on this program in the coming year!

🎨🖌️ Presenting: the winners from this year’s Sticker Design Challenge! Congratulations to these two young artists, 3rd grader Nicole (pictured on slide 3) and 7th grader Mateo! Visit our booth at Old Bill’s Fun Run tomorrow (Saturday September 12) to pick up one of these brand new stickers. Once again we were blown away by how creative and talented our participants are. 🎨 Sticker Design Challenge 2026!

At the end of the summer we tasked Coombs participants of all ages to design a new sticker that will be unveiled at Old Bill’s Fun Run this Saturday September 12. It was almost impossible to choose a winner because they are all such creative and unique representations of what Coombs Outdoors means to them. These 20 amazing submissions are the honorable mentions for the 2026 Sticker Design Challenge.

Stay tuned when we announce the two winners tomorrow and come stop by our booth at Old Bill’s on Saturday to take home a sticker!
